"One Plus One" lacks a critical element

Where is Keith laying down his mesmerizing lead guitar work on "Sympathy for the Devil"? It's the moment that never comes and it bugs me everytime I (don't) see it. Did the film crew take that night off?

This bit's not in the film. I should think the finished song as we know it was worked on in subsequent sessions and dates. Apparently the crew were only there for two nights out of the weeks of recording sessions.

Keith's soloing is quite involved, I imagine he probably tried many attempts before nailing the final version.

It's a horrible movie, the worst Stones movie there is that one can get. Mostly because of the other garbage that's in the movie that is not the Stones.

... i call it Sympathy for Godard :E

the Stones segments are beautiful. and some of the rest is funny.

i also admire the fact that at the premiere when Godard saw the edit that had been made
(making the version called SftD different from the version called One Plus One)
he got so upset that he punched the editor in the face and told the audience they were all pigs.
an exciteable guy :E

If Keith working on the solo had been in the film the rumour that Clapton did the solo never would have gotten started.

ONE PLUS ONE is going to be released on Blu-Ray in Region 2. I'd be curious to see how it differs from SFTD.

... remember that the purpose of One Plus One is not to serve as a Rolling Stones documentary. For that, we have the Best Buy Series.

Apart from the Stones bits One to One is a load of old crap.

>> I'd be curious to see how it differs from SFTD. <<

the only difference i'm aware of is that in SftD (the film) the audio in the final scenes
is the completed studio version of SftD (the song). in One Plus One the completed track is never heard,
which is how Godard wanted it. there might be a couple of other little differences, but that's the major one.
in One Plus One the audio is what the Stones were actually doing in the studio,
which doesn't blow the roof off or anything, but it's quite cool to hear.

Thanks, I knew about the studio version at the end being a major difference. They should put both versions on one dvd.

Keith is working on the solo a little bit in this youtube clip from "One Plus One".
It's the section from about 3:10 up to 3:50

I had no idea. "They" should release a Region 1 edition then.

here's an all-regions UK edition that (according to the first "customer review", anyway) has both versions: [www.amazon.co.uk]
it's PAL, but ... ? maybe your equipment can handle it.

Thanks for the link but I don't have PAL capabilities at the moment.

I forwarded that link to a friend who has an all-regions player -- his smart-ass response:

"I've heard that the Richards/Godard joint commentary is hilarious."

Well then, if that's what it takes to make the movie watchable, I'll pass. That's too much work to watch a piece of shit like that.

The stones segments are very interesting, that's if you enjoy seeing how they work etc, but the rest is a load of nonsense, but it's still worth it for the stones segments alone.

I think it very realistically shows the boredom of living from music in general
and the boredom in recording sessions in particular.
The other stuff is a well put frozen time-pic.
But I didnt say I like it.

For "old" Stones fans, who've been with the band since for instance 1964, One plus One was a revelation! It was the first time (for me anyway) to get an idea of how things went on in the studio. To "discover" how "Sympathy" came into being was amazing in those days. It's too easy to critisize the movie in 2008, while it was meant to be a statement on the year 1968 ...... a unique year for the then upcoming postwar generation.
I have to admit, that the "non-Stones" part of the movie didn't tickle one nerve in my system in those days, but the Stones part was fantastic. See the change of Stones history ... Brian totally in decline, the other members struggling to cope with the situation, not yet aware of was ahead! It's easy these days to substract the Stones part and put it on disc seperately and name it for instance "How 1968 got it's Sympathy" ...... beautiful Stones historycool smiley
