Doxa, is there anyway you'd be up for making copies to send to
a few of us who sign up? Fees for postage, handling, of course,
or we could send postage paid envelopes and CD's. (Not to cause
a riot of response...)

Excellent topic and list!

We could call it Doxa's Definitive Collection of RS Blues Cuts...
or something like that or just Doxa's Blues, for those in the know.

So to the problems of the first set...

I now realize that the concept of 'blues' is much more difficult to define than I thought - that's always the thing with category terms. The correct term to describe the band's catalog in its early days would be 'rhythm&blues', and that's even more difficult one than the 'blues'... it would include anything they did then from Chuck Berry to soul type of songs - so I don't use that here.

It looks like that I have used randomly the following criteria:

(1) any cover of blues classics (made by Dixon, Muddy, etc.)
(2) any Stones original with a blues pattern, no matter the tempo.
(3) the band plays non-blues number with a blues way.
(4) my intuition

Clear, huheye popping smiley

I decide to include Bo Diddley, but leave Chuck Berry out. Therefore I take "Not Fade Away" in, because it is a bodiddley type of song, and the band plays it with such a tough blues attitude. One could have taken also "I Wanna Be Your Man", because Lennon-McCartney seemingly tried to do a rhytm'n'blues kind of number, and the Stones reading with the slide guitar is straight from Chicago, but because of its poppish, horrible Beatle-like chorus, it is left out.

But I am not consistent with my Bo Diddley-policy - I am still wondering if I include "I'm alright" or not...

I put "Down the Road Apiece" on because it is originally an Amos Wilburn number, even though the band plays it with a Chuck Berry way, and Amos is blues enough - plus it is good to have a fast type of blues song, too. But I don't accept "Route 66" - Nat King Cole number, right? Only Berry song is "Talkin' Bout You" because the band plays is as a slow blues. But to be consistent I should include Ya-Ya's Berry numbers, too????

Difficult cases that didn't quite make it: "It's All Over Now" (too r&b), "Pain In My Heart" (too soul) , "Now I've Got The Wittness" (too whatever), "Suzie Q" (too rock-a-billy)... aah, there is so many of them, actually!

And oh yeah, one problem concerns the order of the songs... I decided use the chronological order in terms of its actual release date - it might be better to do with the oder of their actual recording date. Still thinking...

hmmm... I'm not quite content with it; it is one of the borderline cases. It is a Motown number, and even 'worse', recorded by The Beatles, too! grinning smiley

I need to say that my collection is too 'formal' and seemingly lacks some stunning and relevant material, which makes me tempted.

Perhaps I need to make an extra volume ("Bootleg Years") based on non-official material - Chess studio stuff, BBC recordings, "Still a Fool", different CS blues versions, Muddy Waters 1981...

This will be the most interesting volume. With all those beautiful early IBC recordings!!!

Some interesting (?) observations along the way:

After making many three-chord standard blues numbers as originals, The Stones started using the term 'blues' in their song titles when the nature of the song was not so easily identified with the blues. For example, if there would not be the term "blues" in "Stray Cat Blues", the song would not be associated with the blues, right? The model of its origin comes from Velvet Underground, at least according to Jagger. The same is with "I Got The Blues" - it is clearly a soul song like it is argued here. Even the blues nature of "Ventilator Blues" is not such a clear thing. It was not until the b-sides of STEEL WHEELS singles the band started to use the term as one to one with a basic clear blues scale song ("Fancy Man Blues", "Cook Cook Blues").

Okay, all is done by now; my big day has gone, and the collection is completed, Here is the 'ultimate' version presented in my birthday. There are some minor changes to the prior versions, and most important is the decision to play it in chronological order according to date of the actual recording, not the release. I'm still planning to do the volume 4 based on unofficial recordings - but that needs to be selective.

But I tell you what: this is the best Stones compilation yet!!winking smiley

Yes, that a good suggestion! For some reason I left it out. I find it too typical mid-tempo Stones rocker or something - but it could have been included, namely there are songs that defintively are much far away from the blues category than "I'm Gonna Drive". But I have my second thoughts, now!

Hmm... I think the reason is that the song suffers of its context - they recorded and released so many blues-type numbers during that time that in comparion to others it's not so clearly 12 bar blues number. If it would have been relesed in any other time it surely would have been included!

Other borderline cases that still are buzzling me are those great Berry lve covers The Stones did in 1969/71: "Carol", "Little Queenie", "Let It Rock - they have that strong bluesy back beat in them. By leaving 'poor' Chuck Berry cruely out I feel like being one of those boring blues purists who walked away from Brian's band when 'teddy boy' Richards walked in and insisted to play Chuck Berry!! grinning smiley Too "rock and roll", that is, too "Pop".

Yes, that's the secret. The blues is the foundation, the core or the essence of the band. All other musical forms are just (and many times: wonderful) extensions. I think one of the things my complilation shows is that once in a while - sometimes in very crucial times - the band goes "back home" or to the beginning and finds its blues essence - that's secret of wonderful BEGGARS album and the following masterpieces. That's the elixir of their musical low - prior those wonderful and hurrayed punk-driven SOME GIRLS sessions - they really faced the "truth" in those El Mocambo gigs, and played the blues like they used to... When they gathered together again in 1989, the band started to play the honest 12 bar blues in a way they had not done in some 25 years. In fact, they found out the way to play the blues in a different, mature way - and they have never been too far from that ever since.

And yet they didn't include any blues songs on STEEL WHEELS, relegating "Fancy Man Blues" to b-side status -- is that a head-scratcher or were they trying to redefine at that point?

Edited to add: *all* 3 b-sides for that album were straight blues -- so why the decision to not include a single blues song on the album?
