How can it be pointless if the band wants to do it and a lot of people are longing to see them?

Pointless from my own personal perspective (which is what I indicated) which, as a potential ticket buyer, is the only perspective that matters as I'm not remotely interested in nostalgia acts. Goes without saying that if thats what floats their boat and appeals to some people, good for them. I'd just find the idea artistically redundant and quite laughable.

So you don´t think the Stones is a nostalgia act? How many new songs did they play the last tour?

I hate to say it, but if it wasn't for the fact that the Stones are THE STONES, odds are they'd be out on the casino circuit along with the rest of the has beens and 'where are they now?' acts. Face it: they really are a nostalgia act; Mick knows this, which is why the setlists are so warhorse laden. I'm sure the fans who attended the last tour because of "A Bigger Bang" were in the minority. I mean, I haven't seen them live since "Voodoo Lounge", and as good as that album was for the most part, I went for "Exile On Main Street". I cheered loudest for "Rocks Off", not "I Go Wild". That's nostalgia, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. In a lot of ways the world was a much better place thirty years ago. The difference is the Stones charge top dollar so that fans can relive their youth for two hours or so.

In relation to the topic at hand...Led Zeppelin would do the same thing.

I'm reminded of a quote from John Lennon's 1980 "Playboy" interview: "A friend of mine saw Elvis perform in LA. I asked him how it was; he said, 'If you closed your eyes and sort of pretended, it was great!'"

Wasn't Elvis dead already by 1980?!?!?

Eight.

Not too many in 2007, but for most of 2005-2006 they played 3-4 new songs. (Five on one occasion). Still not enough new material for my liking, especially in the last year of the tour.

If theyre playing SOME then theyre not wholly a nostalgia act. Licks could have been something close to that but at least they played a lot of songs that hadnt been played before or for decades. Theres also a significant difference between playing predominantly old stuff and playing NOTHING that is less than 30 years old. When it becomes basically what the Beach Boys have become for the last two decades (ie playing nothing but 40+ year old hits), thats when its time to get off the bus IMO.

The last tour veered very close to being little more than a greatest hits show at times and they deserved a lot of flak for that . If it goes more and more down that road, thats when I'll lose interest. Its not QUITE there yet but I cant see myself going to too many shows on the next tour.

(I'm absolutely baffled that ABB was voted their best tour ever by the fans of this site. I can only assume that Kent was allowed to vote 1,000 times or else it was limited to Romanians and Chinese fans who had never seen them before).

Yuck - they may have played a total of 8 Bang songs but never in one night eh? Yeah, that's not really touring a new record, that's Eh, here's one thing that is new and then we'll get to what you know because anything new is too much of a challenge and bores you because it's not Exile On Main Street now is it?

Well, the Stones are not the Beach Boys because even when the Stones get into playing the same tripe for months it's different stuff. And the Led Zep trip would be whatever they're gonna do. And since they haven't done anything since 1970 whatever, it really couldn't be considered NOSTALGIA since they haven't done shit.

Playing nothing thats less than 30 years old IS nostalgia, regardless of whether theyve recorded in that time or not

However the LZ nostalgia argument would be nullified if they made a record first before they toured. Thats my point.

Anyway, its a moot point. They wont make a new record and they wont tour either.

I think if they (Zep or whoever it turns out to be if it does) toured and then did another tour...with nothing new...then they'd be nostalgia - only doing it for the money. Until then, The Beach Boys own the nostalgia title. And I guess for some people the Stones are coming in a close second from the sounds of things sometimes.

Heard a local radio station tonight do their nightly Zep set. Tonight including the spectactular Tea For One. Afterwards the dj gave two different stories that the song is supposedly about. One was that "Tea" is symbolic for taxes and Zep got tired of paying the taxes in England. The other is that Plant was supposedly alone in a hotel one day on the road and was tired of having "Tea For One". Given Plant's latest recluctance to tour with Zep,I would think the latter may be more true. Although out on tour with Allison these days. I don't think he's having Tea For One anymore.smiling bouncing smiley
