Winter is a wonderful song. Great guitars by the two Micks and I love the beautiful lyrics. One of my fave Stones songs for sure.

Beautiful song. Always loved it like most on Goats Head Soup. The song has a very unique mood and atmosphere (esp. for The Stones), lovely vocals by Mick and overall a great flow. Great great totally under-rated song!

Winter is the most forgotten CLASSIC in the Stones catalogue.
It's a really great song with great lyrics, beautiful strings, guitars driving the song forward. Charlie's doing a great job laying the rythm as always.

Mick's singing is awesome with his snarls which really describes that it is a hard winter.

Jimmy Miller made a great job on the production here!

Everytime I listen to it I hope it will be on a setlist for the next concert!

So to all of you who don't think it's a good song, listen again and again it will grow on you.

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

Ironically (considering it's one of Mick Taylor's finest moments), the backing reminds me of The Faces! The intro sounds just like their version of Jimi Hendrix's 'Angel'.

Fine, fine, fine. Seeing the good old Faces it is no wonder Ronnie was chosen to join the Stones.

Winter has always been one of my all-time favourite Stones songs.

It's a song that only they themselves could have done.

...a masterpiece.

A thing of rare beauty. A gorgeous bittersweet ballad. Absolute bollocks about Mick's vocals not cutting it: on the contrary it's possibly his most tender passionate vocal so far recorded. To die for.

Couldn't agree more.

Come to think of it, the lyrics kind of describe how I feel right now, as an American who has endured almost 8 years of George Bush idiocy. Now that the election is finally imminent, I hope its gonna be a long, hot summer, and a lot of love will be burnin' bright!

Dancing With Mr D maybe - but not Winter.

I can see how maybe you would not like Mr. D the studio version but the live version is in my top ten.

I think the worst part about it are the vocals (I feel Jagger could've done better), but otherwise I love it!

???????... No matter how much I try I cannot imagine how Mick could have done it any better. One of his top three performances ever in a studio track.

The song itself is one of those hidden treasures. The shining moment of the two Micks colloboration. It is also quite unique song in Stones catalog - a very interesting atmosphere. Almost like some Dylan songs, one needs a certain melancholic feeling to really 'get' it.

For J Miller to say Mick could have done better - maybe there was something he was hearing that Mick was almost doing.

No matter - I like it. It's a great song and the lyrics make me think Mick was actually hoping there would be someone in his life to really make him feel that way - a true lost love that was fu*ckin' GONE.

This song is one of their more accessible ballads - it's not too slow and cumbersome like I Got The Blues or Fool To Cry or Memory Motel and it's not overdone like Angie or the ballads on Bridges or the overlong drawn out Til The Next Goodbye and it's certainly not overplayed like Beast Of Burden or Wild Horses.

It's a classic album track that helps close out a pretty damn good album, one of their most underappreciated and great albums.

yeah, I guess Miller was saying mick could have gone more all out But then I think it would have seemed to have been trying to duplicate "Moonlight Mile," whereas with a slightly mellower vocal, it's just a slightly different mood. It's certainly not as dramatic as "MM"--and not quite as good a song, but what is?--but more hypnotic, wistful rather than in pain.

But there are those bizarre references to "Restoration plays" and the bell, book, and candle... nothing too Californian (or Jamaican) about those.

Ha ha ha ha...nothing too Californian about restoration plays! Hey, when you're Mick Jagger, who gives a fu*ck? Maybe that's just where he was when the plane dropped him off for 10 minutes.

It's a unique song - not a lot of other ballads are quite like it.
The lyrics evoke a lot of imagery. It's a stong, thoughtful effort by Mick.

....what he said. ....and I also like the guitar from the other Mick

Yeah, that's the story of Miller 'blaming' Bianca; Mick tried to work - almost nailing "Winter" - when Bianca comes and whispers something to Mick's ear and then they rush to upstairs... Well, we have heard some other stories about the condition of Miller at time of making GOATS HEAD SOAP, and they they are not much confirming his ability to make sharp observations (in fact, what he says about Mick's vocals in "Winter" seems to indicate that he was really getting "out of it"...).

Hmm. I Googled this, and about half the sources say "light of love" and the other half (including Keno) say "lotta love".

I just don't get it. People speak of this tune as if it were epic. I just don't hear it. IMO, not even an above average song. I'm I the only one who feels this?

You ain't alone ... I think someone else has already said that. Whatever it IS, I don't hear it either !

GHS is the coming-down-again album to EOMS' party and it is f*cking great. "Winter" is a brilliant song which I was just "forced" into listening to again due to this thread. (oh - and I looooove "Aaaangiiiieeee" too! Stick that in your chillum and smoke it!) smileys with beer

LOL ... I did too!!

Stones lyrics are how you hear them. Part of the fun is trying to figure out what Mick is saying. And, of course, he has been known to change lyrics on the fly.
