Mick's Spontanaeity
Posted by: hbwriter ()

I don't think any other singer in history has created more little bits of spontaneous magic on record simply by reacting to the music in the moment. The little whoops, hollers, yelps, laughs, etc. that Mick has peppered so many recordings with, for me, give those Stones records an element that make them more real and timeless. The end of Brown Sugar, the reaction to Clayton in Gimme Shelter--any favorites of yours you'd care to call out?

Of course his yelling in Sympathy For The Devil

The first seconds of Stray Cat Blues

Hey, Keith, what'ya doin'? (Dance)

His extreme voice drop in the live versions of Worried About You: "Why do you do that, baby"

There are many many more examples. Sibilant sounds in Miss You. A Whisper in Midnight Rambler. Sexy screams in Hey Negrita. A cool "mercy" in Prodigal Son. His passion in Laugh I Nearly Died. The screams in Feel On Baby. "Oh yeah" as the perfect start of Exile On Main St.

Mick's just a great performer.

I just caught a couple in If you Really Want To Be My Friend - other bands might have edited them out--but they're real -- Mick responding to Blue Magic's b/g vox - I swear, his amazing soul is found in those moments; when he just crackles with reaction and instinctive hum, when the music just seems to possess him and take over.

Yes I agree totally!

However, last night I heard the song Charmed Life and he WHOOOOs so many times that's it really annoying.

C--Well, yeah, sometimes it might seem to be a structured part of a song--the ones that get me are the off the cuff, almost knee jerk reactions of his--it's like he can't help himself at certain moments--and you just believe so much more in the performance when an artist reveals that kind of passion--

Yes, a fantastic show!!! I really like 'Deep Down Under' (Australia '88) too, but THIS is the one Jagger solo show that every RS fan should have in their collection!

Perhaps a little more obscure, but I particularly love all his ad-libs in 'Crawdaddy' from Paris '65.

Mick has never been the greatest singer in the world, but as a vocalist the man's a genuis!

I love that about Mick and worry that the preparation and professionalism that people praise him for these days tends to strangle the sponteneity...

I notice it much less often these days, but I don't think he's become totally predictable and passionless as some suggest..

Yes, & the fact that they leave in little "mistakes" (a bit like the greatest records of Chuck's, Bo's, etc).

No more spontaneus Mick`s sounds nowadays. He is so artificial.....i think sometimes during rehaersals he acts like true , real musician. But it is rare.

Even on recent recordings! I love the "Ahhhh" at the beginning of Shattered on SAL! It shows he's inspired.

And all the crazy noises he makes at the end of Street fighting man on Live Licks.

Once in awhile, Mick seems to succumb to the "Wanna Be A Star" mentality. At other times, he becomes himself, and lets the ad-libs fly. And sometimes, he's just "Being Mick". He's an actor, and "Mick" the Rolling Stone is a character he plays. People tend to forget that. That being said, I really don't think that living an image is easy. Lines become blurred, and many stars get lost in the public persona, sometimes with tragic results.

Thankfully, Mick has grown comfortable with his public vs private personas. This aspect (his inner strength) is too often overlooked and underappreciated.

Think about this -- at no time in the Stones career has any doubt been raised about Mick's ability to survive stardom. Why is that?
