I don't hate anyone, but Springsteen is one of those people who brings out the extremes in people (a bit like Led Zeppelin, The Smiths & Marmite!).

Bruce is a 'topical' subject of conversation because he's the only major league (ie arena/stadium filling) rock act who's touring at the minute in what is a 'dead' period for Stones news. Hence a lot of fans who would like both acts are going to see him - and theres the obvious flip side of this which is the reaction of some who cant deal with any 'competition' (and its not meant to be a 'competition' really and shouldnt be to anyone with a mental age of more than 8) getting any attention that may be favourable.

The same applies when U2 or McCartney are on tour and also applied when Zeppelin did their reunion show. When those acts tour at the same time as there's a Stones tour, there's less of the angst.

The Beatles are in a different and unique category altogether because there's a sizeable proportion of the Stones fanbase who think it's 1964 and have some absurd notion that you cant possibly appreciate them both.

Gazza,I think you get the idea of "the original post" completely wrong.

It´s not dissing groups or artists for a lack of contribution or importance
to music history in one way or another,it´s only a subjective thing.

It´s not a contradiction at all mentioning a band or artist here in this context
with knowing very well at the same time about their/his/her "value" (musically
speaking).

Everyone easily could name some more examples,so what ?

It´s subjective,true or not true,who´s gonna judge ?

But throwing Muddy Waters into here,Gazza, well, you know,....

Shame on all of you who said Beatles, Floyd, Springsteen or Doors. They rate.

Grateful Dead? Who rates them high?

I dont think I've misunderstood it. I think other posters have turned it into an "artists I cant stand" poll.

The original thread title and the first post stating that those artists'"contributions" werent as significant as what they're made about to be is clear enough.

Overrated pretty much equates to "praise way beyond their musical contributions" as far as I can see.

Seems to me people call someone like Springsteen overrated yet he has a massive fanbase. I talk to friends at work about the Stones and they say they are overrated. Truth is most people could'nt name 3 or 4 songs from artists they don't like. I could'nt stand Tom Waits for years but finally I started to listen to his albums and really dig the guy. At the end of the day it's all down to personal taste.

To clarify, The Beatles are one of my very favourite groups (especially their stuff up until 1966), & I have dozens of bootleg DVDs, CDs, etc. But I still thik they're extremely over-rated. Everytime a rare interview or home movie is found it becomes world-wide "news" for f*cks sake, & cr*p like 'All Together Now' & 'Mean Mr Mustard' are spoken about as if these are the greatest things ever written. They were also appalling live, with the Hollies & Cliff/The Shadows being far superior musicians (& often making better POP music too).

For the record, I wasnt actually placing you in the category I mentioned of Stones fans who cant grasp that one can like both acts..

Yeah some strange choices here. How can anyone call Springsteen, Dylan, Sinatra or The Beatles the most overrated? Even if you think they are slightly overrated they are certainly not the most overrated. You have to find artists/bands that have a following that is way out of proportion to what they have contributed music wise to find the most overrated and you can start with Bon Jovi since he has a fairly large following as is evident by my musically blind sister and her husband when they played about five Bon Jovi songs at their wedding last week. You can also include U2 IMO. They have contributed SOME good music over the years but their following is even bigger than Bon Jovi. I would also include Nirvanna as my third.

"Lyin' awake in a cold, cold sweat. Am I overdrawn, am I going in debt?
It gets worse, the older that you get. No escape from the state of confusion I'm in.

You cant be serious. Led Zep, The Beatles, Springsteen.....overated????????
Springsteen....the man brings it night after night. Selling out stadiums. Around the world. Not just in Jersey. Plays several different instruments, writes his own material. Not just pop bullshit either.

Led Zep.....Great Drummer, One of the greatest studio guitarist ever. Great bass player. Great front man.

The Beatles....Do i need to respond to this

Please dont take this the wrong way...but you are an idiot!!

Just could never relate to the "Jersey boy/common man" theme and then what the hell was "Nebraska" about? Now he thinks he's a latter day Woody Guthrie. I did not think his music rang true once he become huge. Sorry, just never got Bruuuuce!

PS..and I met him once when I worked in a record store (Darkness Tour). Very nice guy, my boss made me go by him a Heineken.
