Easy to write off Elvis right? He didn't write his own songs, he "stole" black music and he sucked after he came back from the army and became a fat slob.
This is where all the haters go: "RIGHT!"
Elvis gave so much more than people are aware of.

Ya are an eager, thread starter, Sleepy. Watch out for the "He might be

If I had to choose three, they'd have to be:
(1) The Beatles
(2) Led Zeppelin
(3) Frank Sinatra
(Other possible candidates in my opinion would include The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Clash, U2, The Smiths & Nirvana, but none of these receive praise way beyond their musical contributions as much as the above!).

What about Bon Jovi?
Many, many people think that they are a great band

Some of the inclusions above by Stones fans - who you'd expect to have some degree of musical taste - are head-shakingly ludicrous.[/quote
You'd expect that? I find them often quite blind. If a musician makes a joke about the stones then he is a loser, when he/she adores them, then he/she is great.

I'd probably go for Led Zeppelin, U2 and Bob Dylan. But that's just me.

Well thats a different argument entirely, Harm.
Good musical taste is one thing. Someone who can appreciate the Stones' music gets credibility points based on that alone.
Blind adulation, penis envy and lack of common sense seem to require a different sort of thought process. Or lack of it.
The idea, as per the original post, that the 3 acts named havent 'contributed' much to the history of popular music when they've been directly responsible for influencing countless acts in their respective genre (youd be hard pushed to think of 3 artists as influential even if you dont care much for that artist's own style of music) is possibly the most nonsensical thing I've read here since one poster who shall remain nameless insisted ad nauseam that the Stones started out as a Beatles cover band, even after it was pointed out to him that the Fab Four hadnt even released their first record at the time the Stones were supposedly ripping them off.
Tomorrow I fully expect to be reading posts alleging that Muddy Waters ripped off the Rolling Stones.

I too, think U2 are a little overrated. By that, I mean that they get a little more praise heaped on them than perhaps is warranted. Of course, it just my opinion.

Dylan is a tricky one for me. Now, I really enjoy some of his work and I think he is highly important and rightfuly admired figure on many, many levels. It is just that personally, I can't get worked up or fanatical about him, the way some can.

It is the same with Bowie. Both artists of whom I like the idea of been obsessive over, but for the life of me, cannot manage it. There is much to explore with the pair of them, but it just won't click into place.
