"Let´s Spend The Night..." vs "Live At The Max"

Watching recently for the very first ( and for sure : the very last ) time
"Live at the Max" ,i was impressed how bad this movie/dvd is.

IMO it´s a complete disaster and if you take into account that parts of it as far as i know were "re-shooted" it shows how dissatisfied the Stones were about the results.
I think it´s the worst official movie/dvd release by them.

To the opposite,the heavily critised "Let´s Spend..."/"Rocks Off" movie/dvd
isn´t just that bad.
It has it´s moments ( i like most of the stadium part ) but unfortunately the indoor
parts are played too fast and the cut is too hectic.

I know it´s overdubbed, but that´s with all the official live releases i think.

If you remember that it is the only official movie/film document between
"Gimme Shelter" and that horrible Live At The Max ,"Let´s Spend..."
has it´s worth...

The screwups in LSTNT are because they're playing so furiously fast. The screw up during IORR from the Max movie is brilliant.

But yes, the video overdubs or whatever you call those lip synching/air guitar and drum moments - Honky Tonk Women intro, Ruby Tuesday - are HORRIBLE. They should have left them OUT.

I can't recall exactly what was in the Max movie but I know the B-sides to the Flashpoint JJF has 2 tracks from the movie. Street Fighting Man is terrible - there are no balls, no backbone, there is no meat to it.

Stones at the Max is great being watched in a IMAX dome.
I can't remember having watched it at home since 2002.
I watched the VHS a few times in the 90ies before, and I must have watched the DVD once.

Honestly, the Voodoo Lounge video souvenir (NYC, not Miami) is better than Stones at the Max.

LSTNT is a great document of an era.
I love that movie since it is the only Ron Wood era concert offially released available before the 1989 comeback.
Too bad there ain't anything watchable from 1978...

LSTNT

Raw... messy... long before they realized they needed to stand up straight for the cameras.

Movies beyond it are cinemagraphic events . almost distractingly so.

I'll never forget how shocked I was when I saw LSTNT - this is the same band that released Still Life?

It will always be their worst movie for me. I like it - but it's terrible. A magnificent train wreck. And musically an abomination. But that's the beauty of it.

...as bad as each other.

Missed opportunities, both of 'em, but especially Live At The Max.

Julian Temple should have been shot for somehow managing to mess that one up.

LSTNT was the definitive image of the band for many of us Gen-Xers who grew up in the 80's. It was a hell of a lot better than their cheesy videos and it was what many of us were expecting to see on the Steel WHeels tour (this was way before youtube, the internet and widely availble boot vids.

LSTNT and 'Video Rewind' were all we had besides our CBS records tape collections (ABKCO tapes for some reason were $16.99 while CBS ones were $9.99).

<<The screwups in LSTNT are because they're playing so furiously fast>>

Do keep in mind the music was sped up in that movie. [Anyone knows the reason why?]

I'd choose LSTNT anyday.

The Who's "The Kids Are Alright" suffered from the same problem, but was slowed down when the remastered DVD came out last year. There's even a segemnt in the extras which shows how they did it.

Perhaps one day, LSTNT might get the treatment.

There are a few technical problems filming in IMAX, my biggest bug with the film is that the DVD looks like a VHS transfer.

There were plenty of videos circulating between 1983-90 however there was not that much 81/82 tour stuff: Hampton 81, Wembley 82, Koln 82 audience, the rest was TV news reports with clips. The phily/buffalo 81 etc stuff emerged around 88/89

...and before MTV we had to stare at album covers and use our imagination.
And if we were lucky enough to see our favorite band in concert...all
we had was our memories. winking smiley

To be honest, when I first saw LSTNT (movie theater) I was 19-20 yrs old...
and had never seen a stadium concert...it all seemed very magical but
because the songs sounded significantly different from the versions that
were embedded in my brain....I wondered if the Stones even had the ability to
sound like the records anymore. The Steel Wheels tour and the tours that
came after....confirmed that they could.

I loved the Steel Wheels TOur but I was somewhat dissapointed
with At The Max...and the iMax experience. In many ways...Atlantic City PPV
was more enjoyable.

I still think the New jersey Voodoo Souvenir video is one of the best.

IORR............but I like it!

LSTNT together isn't bad with a tab of E, some spliffs, some good friends, and lots of beer. And lots of giggling and calling Mickette a poofter a lot.

Gen X? I've never identified with a generation of any sort. And you're the only Stones fan I have ever seen that has stated such a thing.

I don't walk around making myself dated with all that crap. It means nothing.

One big error in LSTNT is that they sped up the sound afterwards (so the guitars were tuned in F).. the notes were ment like they played them, not one step higher. But then again the sound on LATM was crap too, it sounded like it came from the studio (most of it did ofcourse, but even the stuff that didn't).

Film-wise, LSTNT is great with beautiful strong colors. The Max looks really flat and the studio shots just look REDICOULUS.
