was 'Sway' recorded at MUscle Shoals?
Posted by: duke richardson ()

I'm thinking Sway was recorded in Alabama at Muscle Shoals? Got to discussing (and playing) the song. I read that Keith allowed as to how he didn't play on it and had to learn it for the shows in '06-07.
Was it recorded at Muscle Shoals? If so I wonder why he didn't play on it..
most people I talk with, even Stones fans, think Keith played on it and are surprised that he didn't.

thanks

According to Kornbachs IORR Sway was recorded with the Mobile at Stargroves March 1970 and overdubs finished up at Olympic in May of same year. As Amused points out everyone is in agreement over the general time frame and personel. But I thought most fans knew Keith didnt play guitar on this(even though it was a surprise) since the original liner notes on SF lists personel.

scottkeef, I've read the liner notes before but didn't notice that (I'm reading them now and clearly see), it's like you can found details (huh! "details"! it's very important, the best song of the best album ever recorded) only when you're exactly looking for them.

anyway, well done Mick, great playing.

Well, in 1971 when I bought the album as a teenager I read EVERY single word on the cover and insert!! So maybe I am a little more fanatical than the average fan!Remenber when you used to buy vinyl and study the cover the entire time you listened to the album? Man am I old!

Aww I miss those times. I was born in 1992 so you know... I'm a fanatical listener, though :-)
Yeah, I have to talk w/ my parents what they've done to me. Several damn decades too late ;(

just to show support for my esteemed predecessors in this thread:
no, Sway wasn't recorded at Muscle Shoals.

One of my all time fave Stones tunes. My best friend, however, doesn't like it. But then again, he likes the Black Crowes. Allowances must be made!

nah I've read in several different books (and websites) that "Sway" was recorded at Stargroves.

I think "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", and "You Gotta Move" were the only songs the band recorded in Muscle Shoals. According to Stanley Booth, they played "Loving Cup" too but might not have recorded it.

I mistakenly told some friends I thought it was recorded at MS. I will set the record straight.

what a great tune. interesting that they decided to play it live after all these years.
also interesting (to me anyway) is that KR was either: not at the session; or realised Jagger had the rhythm guitar part that best suited the song; in any case Keith seems to have decided that his own input wasn't neccessary on Sway.

He didn't play on Moonlight Mile,Shine A Light (the track),or Saint of Me either (studio versions).

It was recorded at Stargroves. I remember reading where an amp or part of Charlie's drum set was put in the fireplace. (not on fire, just positioned there)

Sway was the first item to be recorded in the mobile, the Stones own portable studio, set up on this occation at Stargroves, Mick grand rural property in west Berkshire.

Re: was 'Sway' recorded at MUscle Shoals?

That would make Winter the only Stones song that Richards has never played on (barring the possibility of a live rehearsal) as he has played on live versions of the other four.

Memo From Turner has a few different versions and I think that he played on one or two of them.

I'm pretty sure that Keith did sing backup vocals on "Sway". From what I've gathered, "Sway" and "Moonlight Mile" are a couple of songs that some people think should be credited to Taylor and Jagger. "Time Waits For No One", "Hide Your Love", and "Shine A Light" are some others.

Sway according to [www.timeisonourside.com]

Line-up:

Drums: Charlie Watts
Bass: Bill Wyman
Rhythm electric guitar: Mick Jagger
Lead electric guitar: Mick Taylor
Lead vocal: Mick Jagger
Background vocals: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Ronnie Lane & Billy Nicholls.
Piano: Nicky Hopkins
Strings: (unknown musicians)

>> a couple of songs that some people think ... <<

it would be so pleasant if people would let Mr Taylor state for himself what he feels about what songs

LoFL sorry, i didn't even notice that! elsewhere on the site it says Townshend sang backup on Slave.
someone should let the siteowner know he got his one-syllable S songs mixed up.

Yeah, it would be nice if we could ask him. You know how it goes on here though. You've read all the speculation about which, if any songs, should be credited to Jagger/Taylor. None of us really know for sure, but "some people" think he wrote, or at least co-wrote, several songs that were credited to Jagger/Richards.

I have my own opinion on the matter by I'll keep it to myself. It's safer to state that "..some people think those songs should be credited to Jagger and Taylor..." than to actually state my own opinion, for I would surely be attacked by some dumbass who doesn't agree with me. winking smiley

btw, with sssoul, that last comment is in no way directed at you.

hmm, I don't hear it though... the main guitar doesn't sound much like keith, and it does sound like mick's sound on "Sway" and "Stop Breaking Down," don't you think? and I believe it's just the 2 guitars. taylor's lead is reportedly a one-take affair.

actually there's always the option of not repeating what "some people think".
(i have my own private theories about this stuff too, but it doesn't count for anything -
what Mick T says about it is what would be worth repeating, i think)
