Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All-Time

Another list that we've seen before just in different order...BUT I actually kinda like this list...only because they finally give props to the man himself: CHUCK BERRY. He's the at the #1 slot and I think it's way overdue that he gets top billing in one of these lists. Oh yeah...and our Stones make it on the list too.

Intro for the Top 100:

This is what makes a great rock & roll guitar sound: an irresistible riff; a solo or jam that takes you higher every time you hear it; the final power chord that pins you to the wall and makes you hit "play" again and again. Every song here has those thrills. But these are rock's greatest guitar moments because of what's inside the notes: hunger, fury, despair and joy, often all at once. You hear the blues, gospel and rockabilly that came before, transormed by the need to say something new and loud, right away. Rock & roll has been the sound of independence for half a century. The guitar is still its essential, liberating voice. This list shows the 100 reasons why:

I find it kind of hard to believe that "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" wouldn't be included on a list such as this. It is a fairly all-inclusive list, though.

Same as usual, too Anglo-Saxon-influenced.
Where is Jamaica? Denmark? Finland? Etc.

Well as much as it is an iconic riff...it's hardly as fun to play as the what they chose: "Brown Sugar" and "Can't You Hear Me Knockin" After playing the opening riff to Satisfaction you're practically done and the fun kinda tapers off. BS or CYHMK is a ride all the way and I think that's what the point of this particular list...as predictable as it is.

without a doubt, one of the dummest lists ever.... no satisfaction? yet in almost all other rolling stone mags, they vote satisfaction as the #1 or #2 song of all time? what is the point of these lists they keep coming up with.... they keep changing their minds... stupid

92 Mick Jagger - "Memo from Turner"

Interesting choice. Not a bad list I think, but would that be the best guitar songs ever? Well, when it comes to ranking music it's rather subjective, isn't it?
You fellas should calm down and put on SAL, play it loud and everything's gonna be just fine.

As a list of songs with focus on guitarplayin it's not that wrong!
(See Justins post for Satisfaction).

Of course like always with these lists you could name 100 other songs as well . .

different criteria

A couple of oversights, but its a pretty good collection of songs nonetheless. Some surprisingly fresh inclusions too as well as a few predictable choices.

Brown Sugar - No mention of keith - jagger riff and later Keith put in Open G on electric - sorry keith

CYHMK - again not friendly to keith but our man Taylor got the INK - way to go
Rolling Stones Mag - taylor finally gets some INK.

play that guitar boyhot smiley

28 U2 - "Where the Streets Have No Name"?

Come on. There are more interesting U2 songs to choose than THAT one.

Only ONE Stones song? Is that right? How is Stairway To Heaven a 'great riff' or 'jam' when it's a load of crap?

What a horrible stupid list. The last 15 or so make sense. How My Morning Jacket made it on here is - it just shows how stupid some people are.

I've never understood lists like this. How can you make a sort of statistical list of something that is ENTIRELY subjective. Sure, you're bound to get agitated. But it's not even worth responding really..

It's funny. In my opinion, Keith had the cool guitar part in this song. Taylor's solo had a couple of nice moments, and he had his usual nice tone, but I actually prefer Taylor's rhythm part at the beginning to the Santana-esque jam at the end. Now, that groove he's playing over, that's something special...

A lot of these choices seem as though they felt compelled to include a song, any song, by certain performers. But they made lousy choices. For example, while I can certainly see including a Clash song, I'd have gone with Complete Control. Or Expressway to Your Skull instead of Silver Rocket for Sonic Youth. Or Like a Hurricane instead of Cowgirl for Neil Young. Or Anarchy instead of Holidays for the Pistols. Etc.

And Marquee Moon should have been much higher. And I Heard Her Call My Name should have been in there, period. "And then my mind split open..."
