Listened to ER the other day in the car. What a great bassparts, especially on Summer Romance, where in the verses Bill plays on the backbeat (the snare) instead of on the kick, as most players would do. It's almost like the bass is the 'leadguitar'. I wish they would use Bill again, if only for recording. Then he would not have to fly.
Drums: Charlie Watts Bass: Ron Wood Electric guitars: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Ron Wood (incl. solo) Lead vocals: Mick Jagger Background vocals: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood
Bill's bass on ER is great.....he was playing his part-homemade bass I believe? The one where he bought a cheap second-hand bass guitar, re-cut the body shape and pulled out the frets because they rattled, so it effectively became a fretless bass.
Yeah, that's Ronnie playing bass on "Summer Romance", as well as on ER's title track. His frenetic style (which I enjoy) is distinctive from Bill's swing or Keith's rhythmic/percussive style.
OT Bill or Ron on bass debate: When first listening I heard: I'll be @#$%& you if there's nothing on the telly. Actually, It's I'm playing football or something.
Well, being from the mindset that the bass guitar is a far cooler instrument than the commonplace six-string guitar, Ronnie has one of the coolest styles I've ever heard. I'd put him right up there with the best rock bassists of all time.
