Incredible! Compared to a bootleg of a concert I saw here in Germany in 2005 only Highway 61 and the encore (LARS and AATW) is the same...

Nope.

Then again, I never imagined he'd ever play "If Dogs Run Free"

Generally, with a few exceptions, thereĀ“s a big gap between Desire 1976 and Time Out Of Mind 1997 in the setlists. Over 20 years of recording almost ignored. Wonder why...

Looks like tonight was an historic return to his home state -- copped from expectingrain:

1. Cat's In The Well
2. The Times They Are A-Changin' (A rousing, crowd sing along, with the crowd roaring after every verse)
3. Summer Days
4. This Wheel's On Fire
5. Tangled Up In Blue
6. Masters of War
7. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
8. John Brown
9. Beyond The Horizon
10. Highway 61 Revisited
11. Shooting Star (Dylan played guitar towards the end)
12. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
13. Under The Red Sky
14. Thunder On The Mountain
15. Ain't Talkin'

Encore:
16. Like A Rolling Stone
17. Blowin' In The Wind (Dylan gave a short speech before this song, talking about how he was born the year Pearl Harbor was attacked, and how he's seen a lot of darkness, but it looks like change is coming!)

He was in great form tonight, playing a lot of harmonica, playing guitar towards the end of Shooting Star, strutting around the stage, and the group bow was long and pronounced, with Bob clearly moved by the roaring ovation. It was one of the best nights of my life.

Forever young and Wicked Messenger are quite rare. I think the last time the latter was played was in 2005.

Setlist on election night had some very topical and appropriate selections - he did something similar in 2004, as I recall.

'Forever Young' doesnt get played much as you correctly say. Probably a subliminal 'dedication' to the new President-elect.

Re: OT:Bob Dylan Setlist

He addressed the crowd on election night:

No one was expecting Bob Dylan to say a thing during his two-plus hour concert last night at Northrop Auditorium. For years, Dylan has been known to keep to himself during shows, often only speaking between songs once in order to introduce his band members. But last night, after a lengthy break between his regular set and his encore which I can only imagine was spent discovering that Barack Obama had won the election, Dylan returned to the stage to play "Like a Rolling Stone" and then turned to the audience and spoke.

"I was born in 1941," he said, a wavering sentimentality in his scratchy voice. "That was the year they bombed Pearl Harbor. I've been living in darkness ever since. It looks like things are going to change now."

He turned back to his keyboard and led the band in an almost unrecognizable rendition of "Blowin' in the Wind." Throughout most of the set, Dylan opted to keep his voice low and sparse as he half-sang, half-coughed the words into the microphone, but at the end of "Blowin' in the Wind" he strained his voice to hit the high register of the original melody and held onto the words in the chorus as long as he could. When his voice couldn't bear any more, he picked up his harmonica and practically skipped to the center of the stage. Even from my seat in the balcony it was obvious that Dylan was excited, and it only served to further ignite the fired-up crowd.

As the entire sold-out room rose to its feet with praise, Dylan and his bandmates lined up at the front of the stage to take a bow. In his tight tuxedo pants and white wide-brimmed hat, Dylan danced around like a marionette doll, waving his pointer fingers in the air like guns. It was surprisingly charismatic and endearing moment, and it had the whole room roaring with cheers and applause.
The house lights went up, and our attention turned quickly to the other main man of the night. The crowd started cheering "O-ba-ma, O-ba-ma" in unison as we made our way out of the auditorium. Walking toward the lobby, a swell of loud cheers suddenly rose from the foyer and we rushed to the stairwell to see what had happened. A screen in the lobby projected the results of the election: Obama had already received a projected 297 electoral votes.

As each new throng of concertgoers entered the lobby, a new wave of cheering -- no, screaming -- would erupt. The woman next to me broke down in sobbing tears. My dad turned to me and said, "We won. We finally won." We made our way out into the night, and a huge crowd of concertgoers were already partying in front of the auditorium, dancing to the beat of an impromptu bongo beat. Car horns were honking, people were screaming, and the whole world felt like it had let out one giant, simultaneous sigh of relief.

Here's a set list from the show last night. I'll let the songs tell the rest of the story. Full disclosure: "The Times They Are A-Changin'" brought me to tears.

Cat's in the Well
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Summer Days
This Wheel's on Fire
Tangled Up in Blue
Masters of War
Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again

It's All Right Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
Under the Red Sky
Thunder on the Mountain
Ain't Talkin'

Encore:
Like a Rolling Stone
Blowin' in the Wind

I saw the show in Milwaukee last night - a 7th row dead center seat came my way via a friend for free!

In short, it was great. The sound at first was muddled, very muddled, almost as if they didn't do a sound check. Fortunately it kept improving throughout the show.

Dylan's voice was actually on the strong side at times, he danced in his own way on a few occasions, his keyboard leads were terrific, and it was great to hear a variety of instruments...electric and acoustic.

Well worth a two hour drive in pouring rain to see the legend in a city that is one of the most underrated in the US!

Dylan. Never understood the guy, or why anyone would like him. He has to be the absolute WORST singer in the history of vocal chords. His voice sounds like the sound a yak would make if you had his nuts in a vice. Not that that situation comes up too often, but I digress.

He doesn't even write lyrics as great as everyone claims. He's too much like some of the country singers in that the names of his songs have like 34 words....."I'm Going To Eat A Banana Then Walk Two Miles To See You And You Won't Be There Then I'll Get Angry And Never Come Back Till I Get A New Pair Of Shoes Blues". Not my cup of tea, or anything else. The only Bob Song thats good to me is Seven Days and thats only because ronnie did it better than he ever could.

Re: OT:Bob Dylan Setlist

I must admit I don't even know who he is. Never heard this name before. Hope that's not too grave an outing...

I find it strange, that Stu and Denny were not on stage during that part of the show. Normally guests only appear for a song, maybe two. Remember Jack White's take on Meet me in the morning last year during Bob's concert in Nashville? That was a great one!

Re: OT:Bob Dylan Setlist
Posted by: Lukester ()

He is a local Canadian musician, I think. My speculation is that either Stu and Denny got stuck with a tab at the Waffle House and had to wash dishes to pay off their bill, thus being late for the show, or Bob is publicly auditioning for their replacements. I prefer the latter.

Thanks a lot for the information, Lukester!

This is interesting indeed. My first thought also was that Bob tries someone else for the band. But it's hard to imagine him trying out "local heroes" for that job.

By the way, those of you who frequent expectingrain probably already know, but I found it interesting to read about Bob visiting Neil Young's birthplace, showing the typical worshipping fan behaviour himself :-D

Here's the account of the guy who lives in the house today and who guided Bob during his unexpected visit:
