No, that is not the case. The true value of pictures lies in the photographer's autograph and the limited edition in which these photos are printed/sold.
E.g. , 1/50 means that it is the first print of a limited edition of 50.The first print is very much wanted; most collectors only want a nr 1 print.That print is often more expensive than any following nr. The smaller the edition, the more expensive/exclusive it becomes.
Buying official pictures: you might as well call it an investment or a hobby for people who can afford it. Compare it to any other art form: you can hang up a Van Gogh reproduction . But, the value is nothing. Buying an original is what counts. The same goes for photography.
