Is Chuck the best Stone on Shine a Light?

Alright, the title is voluntarily provocative ("What? Chuck Leavell is not even a Stone"; bla bla bla).

IMHO the question is pertinent as Chuck really delivered an amazing performance. What do you guys think?

Personally, I think it's Michael Davis' finest hour.

there's no game since you have the monstre performance of Blondie Chaplin playing all the guitar parts

If Chuck's the best Stone, it's time for them to quit.

A common criticism of his is that he dominates the sound too much. On SAL you don't hear him too much and a lot of what I hear him do sounds good. So Id say yeah, this is a good performance of his, but he's not the best stone. Hes a good contributer to the sound which is what the keyboard player for the stones should be doing.

Yeah, I don't like when there's too much Chuck. The Rolling Stones sound is Keiths guitar, as raw as possible, for me :-)

But he's a great musician, heard somewhere he keeps the Stones in shape. LSTNT with him sounds gorgeous, so do "Far Away Eyes"!

chuck is not even the best stone in his own household

I'm not a blind (or deaf) follower of the band and/or Chuck. I realize that they make mistakes and sometimes Chuck is too loud in the mix. However, this is due to the sound mixer, not Chuck.

The mixer may be operating under orders from Mick to gauge the guitar players' abilities that particular night and to mix Chuck and Blondie higher if neccesary.

That said, I thought the organ added to JJF (as opposed to the excess of JJF on Flashpoint). Much more like the much-loved version on ya-yas. Really like the 12-string sound on "As Tears Go By" also.

What ryanpow said.

Chuck Berry maybe - coming through loud and clear in Keith's guitar.

I'd pick Darryl as the best non-Stone Stone. I know Chuck has been around a lot longer but sometimes he does some goofy shit. I like Lisa and Bernard...I think they are all pretty damn good.

Best Stone? Charlie. 2nd best Stone? Ronnie Wood! Those two are the most stable throughout the movie/album. Keith has great moments and not so great moments. But that is part of the charm just as well. It seems though that since Keith is such the focus that when he screws up it's really out there but when Ronnie screws up it's more typical and not so out there.

Does Chuck "make" this raw, energetic guitar sound that i love listening to the SAL? I doubt...

I think of the band as the people that play on stage. He may not be a Rolling Stone, there's only four of those left, but he's definetly a member of the band. Don't forget, he plays a big part musically. Mick thinks very much of him, obviously.

If his talent matched his ego Chuck would be unstoppable!

Has anyone seen the documentary bits on Brian Wilson's recreation/finalization of the album Smile? Happened a few years back, but he finally finished Smile and released it. Well they showed some of the studio sessions, practicing, band playing the tracks, etc... What I noticed more than anything, and this bothered me beyond belief, was the leader of the band was NOT Brian Wilson. There was another guy, who I had never seen or heard of, who was smiling, counting off all the songs, telling everyone how to sing/play/drum/everything, and Brian Wilson basically just said 'thats good' or 'do it this way' every once in a while. So basically there was someone else doing his job.

Chuck is great but I kinda see him in a similar role, but working with Jagger. I WISH that Ronnie and Keith would take this part up. Counting off songs, leading, instead of Chuck doing that. But I guess someone has to do it. Nothing against Chuck, he's a great player. Just a little too fancy for me sometimes. I'd rather have Ian McClagan (Faces) or Johnny Johnson any day.

Funny how everything bad about the Stones sound Chuck can get the blame for or have a part in.

Also if anyone has ever met or talked to Chuck in person he probably has less of an ego than anyone on stage with the Stones. Well except Charlie..

I think people dis Chuck because they think he tends to take over the sound.

To that I say... if the holes in the music weren't there in the first place...
... mmmmmmmm-but anyways. Maybe people should look at the guitarists instead? (runs and ducks for cover, pops back out...)

I'm a big Allman Brothers fan, and his work with them was stellar. They're lucky to have him.
