I need to say that 1975-1977 version of the Stones was really the most badass, hedonist, dirtiest, decadent.. the most Stonenish version of the band ever... Jagger was at the top of his game. For some reason, the punkish version of 1978 tour was more 'straight' and 'cleaned up' one...

I see what you mean. And there's much truth in this IMO. As camp as many of Mick's '76 outfits were they still look super cool to me. You can clearly see where bands like Aerosmith took inspiration from. Same with the music. I listened to some Paris '76 recordings yesterday and I was really suprised by the power and coolness that comes across.

Still one can't help to sense some kind of detachment and flatness, when looking at these extravagant costumes and stage props or hearing that slightly bored "I-don't-give-a-f..." singing. It's like they're in the eye of the storm somehow - much posing & theatrics, especially on Mick's side, and that's why it was felt to be irrelevant at the time.

The big difference between '76 and '81 to me is that Jagger still seems more able than willing in '76. Then he just didn't care, but he COULD have sung better, whereas in '81 there was a real change in his singing voice (much deeper and flatter), which gives me the impression he had to hold back a little in order to manage those gigantic stadium shows and his new arsenal of stage moves.

influencing bands like Aerosmith has to be near the bottom of the Stones' achievements, and would only add fuel to the punks' argument that the Stones were a "problem," to cite Johnny Rotten.

I agree though that there's tension between the closely planned, lavish spectacle of the '75-76 tours and the sloppy performance style that accompanies it. Is it a good tension?... sometimes I think so, at least for '75.

Surely they had disconnected somehow - that's what I meant with this picture of being in the eye of the storm: Untouchable and out of touch at the same time...

This was the tour intro in the 'Black and Blue' covered flyer/programme that was around at the time....

Nope, still there in all its glory. If you're passing there's a great little cafe/bar/restaurant called The Troubadour in Brompton Road. Well worth a visit. It's also a legendary folk music venue from the early 60s and legend has it that Dylan played an impromptu set there once.

From the London Evening Standard, two pics from the Stones' two-night stint at the Bingley Hall, Stafforshire, a few nights before the Earls Court gigs:

...and from the Daily Mail, a snip about Keith's bust:

It's so nice to have the Daily Mail as one of our readers!!

The most mysterious and talented Stone. True or false? To me he was, in the 70s and 80s, despite those Jagger/Taylor songs.

It looks like that rumours of Earl Court gigs being their last in 'capital' didn't hold true... Do the Stones ever play in London without that sort of speculation? Remember 02...

But the article is a living proof that The Stones were The legendary Stones in and out of stage... The last comment by (the following Sir) Mick and Keith is so... hmm.. romantic... Those bad-ass out-laws! smoking smiley

Didn't Keith have someone take his driving test for him back in the 60s? Back when you could.

Interesting article from NME about the sometimes bizarre coverage of the Stones' recent activities, especially the contrasting descriptions of Keith's M1 incident! Never trust the papers!!

Rolling Stone reported Keith's subsequent court appearance regarding the crashed bentley and the "stash" of LSD:

...and NME provides a few pics to go with its summary:

I am in my 1975-1977 phase right now! I even broke out my Dragon book of the 75 tour. I haven;t looked at it in years. I tore alot of the pics out and hung them on the walls of my first apartment.

Re-reading Flippo's book too
