I need to say that 1975-1977 version of the Stones was really the most badass, hedonist, dirtiest, decadent.. the most Stonenish version of the band ever... Jagger was at the top of his game. For some reason, the punkish version of 1978 tour was more 'straight' and 'cleaned up' one...

I see what you mean. And there's much truth in this IMO. As camp as many of Mick's '76 outfits were they still look super cool to me. You can clearly see where bands like Aerosmith took inspiration from. Same with the music. I listened to some Paris '76 recordings yesterday and I was really suprised by the power and coolness that comes across.
Still one can't help to sense some kind of detachment and flatness, when looking at these extravagant costumes and stage props or hearing that slightly bored "I-don't-give-a-f..." singing. It's like they're in the eye of the storm somehow - much posing & theatrics, especially on Mick's side, and that's why it was felt to be irrelevant at the time.
The big difference between '76 and '81 to me is that Jagger still seems more able than willing in '76. Then he just didn't care, but he COULD have sung better, whereas in '81 there was a real change in his singing voice (much deeper and flatter), which gives me the impression he had to hold back a little in order to manage those gigantic stadium shows and his new arsenal of stage moves.
