The Legendary Rolling Stones 1962-1983 vs. The ? Rolling Stones 1983-2008

I just love our boys to (till?) death. But they really disappoint me ever after 1983 (dirty work, steel wheels, voodoo lounge, babylon, abb, SAL).

Their reputation is so HUGE...............but they didn't do anything with that reputation to amaze the public after 1983.

Ok today I buy the SAL soundtrack. It's not bad. But is's so easy...

Is it possible that our boys will re-invent themselves? Like 1977-1978? That was really fresh and amazing.

Well, I just don't know.

And how do my fellow Stones mates get over with that?

I think that the Stones have ups and downs : they were up in the early years (around 62-65), then down with Satanic Majesties; after that we get the golden years (68-72) with IMO their best albums of all times 'Exile', they will never reach this level anymore. Then slowly down (73-77), then the last great album 'some girls' and then down again to their worst albums 'undercover' and 'dirty work' (83-86). Since 1989, their albums are always better and better (except BTcool smiley but in a different way then in the 60's 70's.

Finally I prefer the 62-78 period but I enjoy ABB (don't know about SAL)!

Sorry for my english ; I'm a french little boy (but I like it)

keeffriffhard-sorry for overreacting but I can't see them wanting to reinvent themselves at this point in the band's long career. I love them, but at this point I've been waiting a long time for single song to be as good as some of thier earlier work let alone an entire album. But I'm definitely thrilled to see them perform and am always eager to hear whatever new music they can make. You know it can't last forever so enjoy em now!

obviously the stones were better 1962-83 than 1983-present day, but it would be unfair to compare individual albums or songs.

the stones made plenty great songs in the 60,s and 70,s but have also made some great stuff in the latter years.

i prefer to look at thier work individually rather than critisise a particular era.

dont agree some girls was the last great album, tattoo you was, also undercover was great aswell, steel wheels, voodoo longe, bridges to babylon and a bigger bang wernt great albums but still had enough good songs on them to enjoy.

I'd like to see them get back to the blues and R&B...their roots...the music they fell in love with at the start. I'd like to see them make an "honest" album. Express their thoughts and feelings about the world and their lives...express it through the blues and R&B. They haven't really "spoken" to us since Some Girls. Since then, it's just been songs...

I think their last inventive album was Undercover. Compared to their previous album of actual recording, which would be Emotional Rescue, it's an amazing difference. Especially after the way they played on the Tattoo You tour - fast, furious and not very good. And of course three years later after Undercover we get the amazingly frustrating Dirty Work followed by the by-the-numbers bland yet upbeat Steel Wheels.

I really liked Voodoo...but for some reason I've always gone back to Bridges To Babylon as their best since 1983. I think as far as steady goes, Voodoo is the steadiest album since Some Girls. And A Bigger Bang is even more so that - it's solid.

They will always be compared to their past, just like how Wayne Gretzky 'only' got 196 points the season after he got 212. As he got older and slower, he still had brilliant moments. But he wasn't brilliant anymore. But he was still a damn good hockey player.

Shine A Light vs Got Live If You Want It (Which you won't because it's partially studiotracks with crowdnoise overdubs...)

Saw Shine A Light today and it totally rocked! Best Stonesproduct in years.

I really like them when they started to create their own style 67/68. Since that, well there are up and downs. Also it depends on the time, when is something released and by what is it sourrounded. I really like Dirty Work but Steel Wheels is a really bad sounding album. Voodoo Lounge is a very MOR album but has better songs than Bridges but we can talk for hours about this. I like them really when I play them or when I see them. Bigger Bang is also a great record. maybe a bit too much compression but much power

Became a fan in 1988, and therefore didn't know very much about them untill after that. Except their major hits of course. I'm due to that, a "modern" Stones-fan, but have truly come to apreciate their 60's and 70's stuff. Especially 68-72 of course. I love it all!

In genearl there is an arc to most bands career, Im sure we would arguee abiout when the peaked but i guess most of us woul be in the same ball park ( around the taylor years somewhere, maybe ???) we migh arguee about how good or bad later albums are. its just the way it is. I havnt been excited about a new stones album since , well before CDs but a live gig is stillsomething to look forward to. maybe its expectations

When you look at artists who have had the longevity like the Stones have had, you have to put it all in perspective--
those early years, they were young, everything was new, they were pushing the envelope, breaking new ground, things were exciting.
The "Golden years" they hit their peak with albums like Let it Bleed through Exile
they levelled off for a few years after that while still producing solid work.
The 80's found them in a pretty dry period, the 90's they rebounded a bit, and now they are in the later stage and have nothing to prove, can still play like no one else when they want to, but they have been doing this for so long that its like being on auto pilot-- the shows are down to a formula now and so are the albums-- still great to hear and see them, but it is what it is--
they used to lash out against the establishment, but now they are the establishment.

While I don't entirely agree with the sentiment expressed, it should also be put in the context of a band at roughly age 18 through age 39 vs. a band at roughly age 40 through 65. Common sense dictates the former will outweigh the latter in terms of creativity, accomplishments, energy, etc. For their ages, the Stones were amazing at 40, 50, 65 etc. compared to their peers in the rock world or in everyday life. To expect them to match their earlier achievements is far from realistic. Although they do well enough to hold my attention span.

its amazing how someone can really like dirtywork but not like steel wheels, i got into the stones halfway between these albums and i was extremely frustrated to listen to dirtywork, at least with steel wheels it was an album you could let freinds listen to and not be embarrassed what the band had become.

I totally agree with you up to this point.
I did like Voodoo Lounge, but for me, nothing the band has done since Steel Wheels as-an-entire-record that any of them have done has topped Wandering Spirit. Bridges has 3 AWESOME songs but is weighed down too much by mediocrity. The 4 extra Licks were barfilicious and pointless. ABB - the intention was good, but the writing for me just wasn't there. And there's a few really $#!tty songs that bog it down (while the very, very best song of the era was criminally tacked on to a rare extra over-priced DVD add-on)

I love them all the way from 1962-2008.You have to understand that a band is like a man.It has his ups and downs. There many songs, that for me at least are great from the later years that are overshadowed from the previous ones.
