Dennis DeYoung's review of SAL on "Chicago Tonight"
Posted by: little queenie ()

I couldn't believe that Dennis DeYoung from Styx was interviewed about his opinion on SAL on "Chicago Tonight". They were looking for a local "rock star's" review.

Dennis started off by saying he had never seen the Stones live and only had two of their albums. He explained this as the fact that in the world of the Beatles vs. the Stones - he was a Beatles fan. And later slipped in that although the Stones had a big catalogue of songs, the Beatles' catalogue was better.

However, he is unaware of most of the Stones' cataglogue because his main complaint was the setlist. He did not know Faraway Eyes or Loving Cup. He thought Mick and Keith interfered with Buddy Guy too much - "let Buddy play" was what he kept saying! He didn't like Just My Imagination - he'd want to see that as much as Pavarotti singing HTW. Oh - and regarding You Got the Silver, "let Mick do the singing"!

However, "if they only played" HTW, PIB, YCAGWYW, 19th Nervous Breakdown, then it would've been a good show. 3.5 stars if you're a fan, 2.5 if you're not.

I can't believe this guy was so out of touch with the Stones...

It really doesnt matter what someone from Styx says...they are arguably the one of the worst ever bands (I wont even call them Rock and Roll)....coming from one of them, thats a RAVE review....

yep..that's surprising LQ. you'd think a musician who's records
shared the billboard charts with ROlling Stones releases would
be up to speed. Actually you'd think that simply being a human being
on planet earth..you'd be more familiar with the Stones than he
claims to be.

2 words: Mr. Roboto

Dennis DeYoung reviewing anything about the Rolling Stones would be like Thomas Kinkade critiquing something by Pablo Picasso.

What a moron. He shouldn't have reviewed it if he don't know shit about the Stones.

give the guy a break. put yourself in his shoes. he's not a big stones fan and was giving a review because he's a local celebrity. his comments though are what 99.9% of the stones fans would say. they didn't know half of the songs and they would rather hear mick singing. i'm sure we've all been to a stones concert and seen people going to the bathroom or going to get snacks when the stones aren't playing a warhorse or keith starts singing

Actually, Chicago Tonight is an excellent program - a model for what good television can be. It's too bad they didn't tap into someone from the Chicago blues or soul community who wold have a better understanding of the Stones style.

I was shocked a usually intelligent show have a guest with little to no knowledge of the subject of the night. I wrote them a scathing email pointing out how badly they dropped the ball. .

That would have been more appropriate, or even someone younger from the Chicago music scene who has a better grasp of the Stones than this bozo, e.g., Jeff Tweedy, Liz Phair, Blackie O., etc.

Mick should have said Buddy Motherfu*cking Guy but instead he said Buddy Motherfu*cker Guy.

I don't get why he said it that way and not the other.

Hey, isn't that Styx guy the one who quit singing for them? Is that the band? Because the lights were too bright or something? So he quit?

The hell is HE talking about anyway? He knows NOTHING.

Sounds to me like Mr. DeYoung needs a good old fashioned wedgie.

"Lyin' awake in a cold, cold sweat. Am I overdrawn, am I going in debt?
It gets worse, the older that you get. No escape from the state of confusion I'm in.

Doesn't Chicago have better rock stars then Dennis DeYoung they could have talked to? He actually got kicked OUT of Styx.

The problem with the show was not DeYoung being a jerk, just unbelievably ignorant of the subject he was brought in to discuss. I guess the producers assumed a member of a rock band would have some knowledge of the greatest band ever. They were wrong, but of course Styx's lead guitar player (I don't know his name) was shocked at how little DeYoung knew about what made his own band a tiny bit popular long ago. They split up because he wanted more theatrics and lame songs like "Lady", while the rest of the band wanted to play guitars and drums.

thats true but since the song LADY was on one of the first styx albums and it was over 15 years later before dennis was kicked out i doubt it was that song that drove them over the edge
