I believe I do it in cycles of something like 36 months.. I recall a period (my polo sweaters- chain smokin' & Dubliners-period), when I aimed at being a Generation Interpretator Author, around 1989, listened exclusively to Irish folk and classic like Vivaldi (ok, and Doors, but mainly their non-rock stuff). In 2002-03, slightly before I rushed into the Stones madness here, I listened to chansons, European, singers-songwriters etc. But the rock music always bounces back.. And inside the rock music, the rock and roll always bounces back on me. As soon as I get tired of rock, some Australian or Dane ships away some peculiar yet rootsy rocky disc herewards.
Well, I've never been really tired of rock'n roll music, but once in a while or some short period of time I rather listen to other stuff like easter european folk music, for instance. Yet rock'n roll always bounces back... I have to say I got quite fed up with jazz music, I can't understand why with so much great folk music here in Europe most musicians stick with playing american '50es music...
dont know the boundaries of your "rock n rll/rock" music bro, but certainly i listen to a lot of different genres of contemporary popular music. in fact i would say that my obsession is a "stoned specific" one. In my 20ies i was exploring back the history of "rock" and "rock and roll" a lot but now i listen very little to let's say led zeppelin, byrds, doors, zappa, presley, beatles, berry, who, velvet, stooges etc more, i have a sort of refusal to the nostalghia mood about the sixties and the seventies rock music i like it but i do prefer look after new things of course sometimes (well very often) these new things are pretty much in debt with all that (expecially with the VU i would say, but also with pre war folk and blues etc) but there's also a lot that is significantly new and other take all the things that came out of the brian eno and electronic wave. do you call it rock? I probably will because i dont care pretty much of taxonomy. yet it is certainly not rock and roll as in maybellene. there's a lot of good music that sprang out of that seeds and continue to. i would say that i dont get tired of rock because what i prefer to listen to is music that i still can loosely call rock and that actually is an hybrid of many different things
Great post, BB. I occasionally go through periods of listening to acoustic singer/songwriter stuff. I've found some great obscure music that I really enjoy. Then, out of the blue, I'll hear JJF or BS on the radio and I'm sucked back in to the Stones, at which point I'll get out the boots and it's like becoming a Stones fan all over again. It's a strange thing but I know just what you're talking about.
Yeah, Bro, I go through those spells when I'll listen to lots of classical, blues, bluegrass, old country, rockabilly, reggae, Motown, Stax, or a zillion other styles.
I always "Come back baby, rock and roll never forgets".
Not sure I get tired of rock n roll but I do often go through periods where I listen to lots of reggae, usually in the summer. Also like listening to jazz and even some rap music (The Roots, Common). Also go through periods of listenings to one band a lot, like say the Dead I will listen to a lot for a few months than not listen to them at all for a little while.
Glad to see its not just me Baboon Bro. one minute its late 60s early 70s Brazilian ( i love early Jorge Ben). next it feedback with Sonic Youth and the likes. i can go thru a period of raw 60s stuff. at the moment its Planxty. I do go back to regular stuff over and over 60s soul 70s reggae Van Morrison ( up to mid 80s) 60s garage irish trad/folk any guitar band with tunes and good vocals and on and on
i do get jaded at times but its always just a matter of time before something shakes me up. last week it was Mr. Soul - Buffalo Springfield at full blast. i was stood between the speakers, it was like i had heard it for the first time.
I've been sick of The Stones, I've been sick of the Beatles. But Rock music encompasses so much more than two-guitar, four/four beat blues-based riff music. I can't say that I've ever been sick of it.
If you over-stuff your ears with anything, you risk putting yourself off of it. I'm even getting tired of some of our songs - and the CD's not even printed yet!
I often need a break from the music I love to rediscover it later and have it seem fresh again, but that is why the Stones are number one in my book. I can rotate their different periods due to their longevity variety and long span. I basically break it down to the early Brian Jones era,(with fantastic covers and youthful energy) the marginalized Brian Jones era when Mick/Keith started dominating (the greates hits era), the Mick Taylor era (my favorite) , the late seventies to Tattoo you, and then the rest. I am never sick of all of them at the same time. Rolling Stones number one!
