Elton John had some expletive version of "Thank God he didn't mention me" sort of thing, when he came on.
I can't get too worked up about/against Mike Love though. It was obviously a special night, and he's a bit off as we know, but he has his place. He actually started off if I remember right, pointing out Muhammad Ali who was in attendance and rambling at that point before segueing into his battle of the bands bit. For entertainment value, it goes a lot further than say, some long boring Jackson Browne type of speech we were treated to in later years.

As I recall, Elton inducted/introduced the Beach Boys, so he didn't get a chance to comment on Mike's speech...at least not that evening.

I excuse Mike Love... I think the poor guy is just insecure. Plus it set up Bob Dylan with one of funniest lines I ever heard.

Dylan is weird at times, but when he needs to be, he's cool so easily. As overrated as Dylan may be, many people (especially these days with a newer generation) truly don't understand how amazing he is. I'm glad he reminds people every 5 years or so.Quote
