We can all pick out the Chuck Berry in Keith but where do you hear Keith's influences?
I got turned on to a great album called "Wicked" by Shemeka Copeland, duaghter of the late Jonny Copeland, a great little R&B album. The first song "It's 2 A.M." has a bit more rock feel to it and my first comment to my girlfriend was her guitar palyer is a Keith fan. By some twist of fate she was playing a couple of months later and we had to see her.
The band comes out first like all great 'vegas' style bands, and the guitar player is doing the typical "Shemeka will be out in just a couple of songs". Now I have this guy pegged for a Keith fan, but he is dressed in the matching vest and slippery pants, a Sienfeld puffy sleeve shirt and he was a dead ringer for Bob Eubanks (the newly wed game host), hardly a rocker if I had to peg him. I start to doubt this is the guy on the album but Shemeka says he has been with her for years. They do a great set of differnt style songs and as they are about to break into the last song she says that they have covered R&B, Blues, Jazz and it's time for rock and roll. Just then the guitar player takes a step forward and hits the first three power chords of Start Me Up, with a big smile on his face, "not that kind of R&R" she says, he pouts and steps back. I turn to my date and say...see I told you he was a Keith fan.
I'm always picking out Keith's syle of guitar in others work, any other examples?
1st track on the Jason Isbell album which ironically is the worst track. The chord progression is very similar to a Stones song but I can't quite place it.
