at Sheffield 06 Keith started Brown Sugar instead of Start Me Up
and stopped after two chords, his whole body expressing a hilariously endearing OOPS -
but that's not quite what the thread's trying to be about, is it.

i did once see them re-start IORR - Mick going "naw naw naw that won't do at all" :E

i think it was Ronnie who once observed that Keith has a tendency to start wrong
on numbers that have "rock" in the title.

In Prague 2003 Keith started the riffs of Tumbling Dice instead of something...
Stopped and switched to Midnight Rambler.
But I guess it was rather audience teasing than a real mistake.

In Rio 2006 on the B- Stage Keith started playing "Oh No Not You Again" instead of "Rough Justice", so he had to try it again ("It's a boogie - woogie") ;

In Budapest last summer Keith played the intro of "Rough Justice" in such a lousy way that he raised his arm and got the band to re-start the song. From the first row @ Keith's side it was very cool to watch!

Keith had to stop Brown Sugar two chords into it in Edmonton 1998. I had the DVD once. Bad quality so I shafted some DVD-dealer at a record fair. I got Budokan 2003 in trade. That one is much better.

There is a boot called 19th Nervous Breakdown with lots of bad starts, endings, etc...
Some comments in the back cover:
1. She's So Cold - London 1982 -a masterpiece of not getting together the start of a song which is not much more than a lullaby
2. Like A Rolling Stone - Cologne 1999 -only Chuck Leavell seems to know what he's doing at this palce
3. Before They Make Me Run - Amsterdam 1995 -Keith's giving it a second chance - useless
4. Just My Imagination - Philadelphia 1981 -Los Tres Guitarreros with sleepy fingers
5. It's Only Rock'n Roll - New Jersey 1997 - Mick's beginning to sing @#$%& - the big website-surprise an hour later...
6. It's All Over Now - Amsterdam 1995 -It hasen't even started yet, didn't it?
7. Gimme Shelter - London 1999 -Keith is learning a new song
8. Midnight Rambler - Seattle 1972 -lots of tuning couldn't prevent a second start
9. Prodigal Son - Oshawa 1979 -just listen
10. Time Is On My Side - Philadelphia 1981 -again in Philadelphia, still not awake
11. Brown Sugar - Madrid 1990 -Mick's excusing to the band for this one
12. Jumpin' Jack Flash - Oshawa 1979 - is this what originally mean to be?
13. Excerpts from Sad Sad Sad - Syracuse 1989 -Keith, whar are you doing ???

Many times. I have been to many shows, and it has happened many times. They are very very pro, and they don't mind a restart if needed.

That was a good one...'Arthur who?'

I was up at the front at the '99 Wembley show when Gimme Shelter hit a wall. Keith just messed up the intro with a glorious bum note and then put his head in his hands as Mick and Ron took the piss. Nice to see moments like that up close - wouldn't be the Stones if everything went according to plan all the time.

Jagger's microphone wasn't working as he started singing Brown Sugar in New Orleans in 1978. He eventually retrieved one from somewhere around Charlie's drums. I do not recall if he caught up in the middle of the song, or they extended the intro. Anyone else remember this?

The EXACT same thing happened at FedEx Field in Washington DC in '97. Two chords of Brown Sugar, an extremely short pause, then Start Me Up.

I'd have been willing to believe Keef did it on purpose, except that it all happened in a split second, plus, after SMU got moving, Keith shot Charlie a glance and a smile as if to say (as 'with sssoul' noted for Sheffield) 'Oops.'

yeah, being handed certain guitars seems to trigger certain synapses. seems quite natural!
and the way he put his whole body into the OOPS at Sheffield was just plain sweet :E
