QUESTION: Memo From Turner
Posted by: Cafaro ()
Date: January 29, 2008 03:59

Of the 3 versions that are out there, which one features the Stones (if any). I read that the Metamorphisis version is the Stones but then I read it was Al Kooper on guitar.

Does anyone know?

I thought about that many times. But to me NEITHER version sounds very much Stones alike. Surely not the Metamorphosis version. And the third (officially unreleased) version seems almost like a tryout for the final version, as Mick's singing is very similar to the final take. But if I remember correctly (can't check it right now) the slide fills and the backing track sound much more shaky and tentative. So, if I had to choose I'd say this is the Stones take.

It is the same vocal take, Ry etc simply overdubbed(they were sent a tape with a click track and the vocal) which resulted in the superior soundtrack version.

Thanks Mitch. I didn't know that that was a rule here at IORR.

In the future, I will certainly run a search before I make any post..............on any forum.

Good call Cafaro. Hell it's not as if we've only ever had the one Mick Taylor or setlist or 'Bring Back Bill' or Led Zeppelin etc, etc,etc threads before.

It is not a rule, only a efficient way to get a answer to a question.
Anyway, I am probably not the only one to get bored to read always the same old questions.

4 versions?

Metamorphosis - fast and agitated.

officially unreleased version - slow and brooding. (template for the following)...

Performance - tight, slow and dwirty.

I am suprised that you read every thread. I don't have the time for that.

Also, if you see a question regarding Memo From Turner and you know that it's been covered before....why open the thread?

Right on, Carfaro. Nobody has to open any "boring" threads. Complete freedom of choice!

on topics that have been discussed often, it can be difficult to sift through all the chaff to get to the answer. It seems to me worth asking to get a concise response that has had the benefit of learning from all the previous discussion.

for example, I still haven't sorted out which take of this song is which, and where they're available--I think the version HM recommends is on the new jagger collection, but I'm not sure, and I think it was discovered to have been edited--and I don't want to read through 4 long threads.

Only BV has the key to lay down the rules. I enjoy Cafaro´s post. He´s a cool cat.
