Pretty Things tonight - 100 Club

Any of you lot out there going? Should be a corker as they're playing an r'n'b set first and then a psych set. Only £17.50 to get in too. They usually sign stuff afterwards and it's always good to chat with Dick Taylor about the old Dartford days.

I'm seriously tempted. Supposed to be working until midnight but only half a mile away from the 100 Club so I might sneak out & see the show then if necessary go back & finish off. any idea what time they come on or what time the psych set starts?

I like them pretty much. True surviviors. They had it all, did R&B, did Psychedelic, even did the first "rock opera" and still somehow missed the boat all the time.

Wow - must be a new edition. I've got the old cd-only box set of the same title. Tremendous!! Encouraged me to buy some of the albums too (they were cheap to get, some time after SPV re-released them). Have fun at the show!

Have you guys ever heard the Phillipe DeBarge album by The Pretties? It was recorded between SF Sorrow and Parachute and was financed by a French millionaire fan of the same name. Fantastic pop psychedelia. Unfortunately it was never released but the odd bootleg turns up now and again. I don't think it was ever put out at the right speed as the versions I've heard sound slightly speeded up. But it doesn't detract from the great music within.

I read about that, but not much honestly. Sounds like a great story and wets my appetite, as this was an interesting period for the Pretty Things. I like both of them, SF Sorrow and Parachute.

Phillipe DeBarge is more on the SF Sorrow side of things but it's psychedelic pop as opposed to the psychedelic rock of SF Sorrow and the psychedelic prog of Parachute. There's a big difference to psyche connoisseurs.

I see. But psychedelic pop is a very interesting option nevertheless ;-)

What I like about this particular phase is that the Pretties were really stretching out. If you look at "Defecting Grey" for example, it's not much of a tune, but it's a very interesting track, naive and playful at one moment, rocking hard the very next. Some might call it a mess but I have lots of fun listening to it.

I'll bring you a copy down to the 100 Club if you want. Great stuff but it needs to be slightly speed corrected. I take it you know all the Pretty Things' Electric Banana recordings - 3 album's worth. This was also psychedelic stuff they recorded 68-71 with view to getting it used for film soundtracks. They recorded for a company specialising in sourcing film music called De Woolf who were based very near the old Marquee in Wardour Street, London. One shop that should be able to help and who may stock some of this stuff is Bill Allerton's amazing psychedelic music emporium Stand Out off Portobello Road.

Will try to make that date Ade but as I've just become a father it'll be a little difficult. More likely is the 100 Club date. It's great being a dad but I'm having to carefully select my gigs and there's this lot to choose from - Robert Plant/Alison Krauss - Wembley, Bruce - Emirates Stadium, Driveby Truckers - Electric Ballroom, John Fogerty - Royal Albert Hall, Leonard Cohen - 02 Arena, Goldfrapp - Royal Festival Hall, Neil Young supported by Primal Scream and Supergrass at that festival in Kent, My Bloody Valentine - Roundhouse, Van Morrison and Brian Wilson - Kenwood House. The list goes on.

sounds like you've got a busy summer lined up, one way or another!

The Pretty Things are also, supposedly, the support act for
Chuck Berry's brace of gigs, at the Hackney Empire, in July.
