Are you a Stones-fan or Stones-freak?
Posted by: franzk ()

I wonder how many people here consider themselves Stones-fans and how many Stones-freaks.

By a Stones-fan I mean a person that:
- may have all or most official Stones releases but does not feel the urge to own all singles, compilations, solo albums etc...
- may enjoy to listen to bootlegs but do not collect them
- enjoys Stones shows but does not follow them everywhere (2-3 shows per tour are sufficient for them)
- does not collect everything which is Stones related etc.

Analogically a Stones-freak:
- tries to posses all Stones releases, even different pressings of one single, rare album pressings, and all Stones solo work
- tries to get as many bootlegs as possible. Can disscuss differences of Mick Taylor solos from both Seattle '72 shows for hours
- follows Stones on every tour. Sees at least a dozen shows on every tour. Goes to see them in US, Europe, Asia, South America, and wherever it's possible.
- collects posters, books, photos, tour programmes etc.
- The Rolling Stones are not the centre of his/her life. They are the centre of the entire universe winking smiley

So do you consider yourself a Stones-fan or Stones-freak?

I'm a fan, according to this definition.

I would imagine most people on here fall about halfway between both categories, to be honest.

Personally, I would avoid most people in the second category - as should the Stones, if they have any sense.

just bear in mind that there might be people who consider themselves stones-freaks but just can't afford to travel to different continents to see them or own every album in different pressings... being a student, I'm one of them. although I must admit that the stones are neither the centre of my life nor of the universe...

Nice definition thumbs up
I'm between fan and freak, although - as measured by population-average - I'm more like a freak.

Yes, Gazza, good point, many of us here would fall in the middle,
into the "fan-freaks" perhaps.

Definitely a fan. I have all of their studio albums and live albums (except Live Licks) but I'm still missing a few comps. Some comps I have on lp/cassette but didn't get around to getting on cd. The only official U.S. releases I don't have in any format are Forty Licks. Live Licks, Metamorphosis, and Rewind (not sure if there is anything on Rewind I don't have elsewhere). I'm also missing one Jagger and one Richards solo album but the missing pieces have more to do with finances than a lack of interest in them since they are undisputably my favorite band of all time.

A fan.

Mind you, I've had the Bigger Bang DVD set since August but haven't played the Rio disc yet.

...do I lose points?

Fan, though since my best man/brother mentioned in his toast at my wedding that my favorite group was the Stones in high school and then still when I got married in my 30's, a very big fan. (My claim to Stones fame: you can hear he and I talking in between songs on the Stones at the Double Door bootleg.)

I don't fit in none of those 2 categories.

I would consider a person like this to be mentally disturbed, but also, someone I wouldn't mind having a couple of beers with.

In his speech at my wedding, my best man 'consoled' my wife's parents by telling them "dont think of it as losing a daughter - instead, think of it as acquiring one of the biggest collections of Rolling Stones bootlegs in the world...."

I am a fan because the Stones are fascinating. I don't believe that my passion and deep interest are freaky; the stones have produced a lot of music and they have lived unusual lives. To listen to all of that music and to read about all of those anecdotes require lot of time. Then once one starts to get into it it is hard to stop and get out; it is too good. They are, as a band, one of a kind and I am glad that they have been around while I was around.

Another criteria for a Stones-freak could be the number of postings made on iorr...
I consider myself a fan, but if I had the money I would have seen a helluva lot more shows during A Bigger Bang than the 5 shows I got to attend.
