OT: Opinion of Favre out of U.S.

I'm watching the game right now, listening to STD, and wondering whether Brett Favre is known outside of the U.S. and, if so, opinions of th man.

Here in Denmark TV has been showing the Super Bowl for the last 15 years or so, and regular season games for the last 6-8 years, and the last 5 years it's been a sport gaining more and more fans over here, with two games on TV every week. And I dare say, Brett Favre is the player with most fans over here.

That's interesting. I would have thought most people outside the US either don't know who he is or don't give a damn.

One of the better American football players.
He's from Kiln, Mississippi, just up the road from me.

<<That's interesting. I would have thought most people outside the US either don't know who he is or don't give a damn>>

Well atip, football's popularity has really been growing the last couple of years. I would guess it's the 4th most popular TV sport here, eventhough the games are being showed late at night. Only beaten by Soccer, Handball and Ice Hockey.

The reason why; I think there's been a hardcore following of football for many years, and with more TV networks competing on rights to show different sports, one of them just took the chance on NFL.

Also the increasing amount of money being paid for rights to show soccer on TV, has made the networks to look for cheaper options.

Another big reason might be that Denmark is not exactly a great nation when it comes to winter sports like Alpine and Cross Country Skiing etc., so football simply fills the gap for sports fans

The fact that the kicker Morten Andersen is from Denmark have also helped bringing more attention to the sport.

I think people outside the U.S. are more likely to watch American movies than America sports and may know him from the movie "There's Something about Mary" rather than from his football games. He was in the movie towards the very end.

Here's an opinion from inside the US -- he'll never be Joe Montana.

Here's another opinion from inside the US - America gave you it's crappy fast food till the whole world - from Europe to India to Japan to Brazil - became saturated with McDonalds, etc and now it's giving you it's crappy sports.... Pile it High, Pile it High on the Platter !!!

I'm impressed that you admit to living in Mississippi. My heart goes out to you. (I live between Austin and San Antonio)

(indulge me) I can only think of 4 good things about living in Mississippi :

1.) It doesn't snow
2.) Cheap Real Estate
3.) Not crowded
4.) Plenty of great fried catfish

I reckon Sohoe's answer goes for people from Mid Jutland, Denmark,
or Mid Fyn, ditto.. Never heard of anyone watchin' the bizarre
type "football" ya got over there.. Interest level as cricket for
myself (ok, now I got both the UK- a n d US-people on me) winking smiley

Note: "Football" for us is the same as "soccer".
As it is for 98% of the world. winking smiley

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Still... Mississippi is cool & I have the deepest respect for
the specific national cultures... Just kiddin' above...

Don't let you heart bleed too much, Duane!

I live in New Orleans, the Vieux Carre, commonly
known as the French Quarter, although most of the
architecture in my old neighborhood is Spanish due
the fires of 1788 and 1794. The city was re-built
during Spanish rule. Perhaps one of Keith's smoldering
cigarttes started that second fire after the 1792 tour
show here.

Kiln, Missssippi is about a one-hour drive from me.
Probably a pretty good place to live, if you like country living.
Might want to add fried chicken to that list.

Glad to hear that. 'Nawlins is (or WAS) a very cool and interesting place to live. I lived (and got married) in Lafayette several years ago. I WILL say, however, thet LA is definitely the most lawless, liberal and corrupt state I know of. That can be good OR bad, depending on the circumstances.

Peace. Out.

A couple of more things, Bro.

He plays for Green Bay - in the northern US, in an area with lots of Scandinavian descendants. Known as one tough SOB. Greatly admired by almost all.

I got to see him play in college vs. Georgia.

And their fans are called "cheeseheads."
Don't know where the "Packers" name comes from, though.
At least they're not into fudge!

ok...i guess i'll chime in now....

For those of you outside the USA...Green Bay is in my state of Wisconsin.
Brett Favre is our Michael Jordan. People worship him. He has been the savior
for Packers fans since 1992. (I'm in Milwaukee...Green Bay is a couple hours to the north.)

If the Packers win the SuperBowl this year...he might retire on top.
Lately he's been hinting that he will play another year.

I t must be good to live in a state that prides itself in being the number one state in prisoner executions.

I live in Mississippi also. So, you live in Bush country. GREAT!! What about the music that comes out of Mississippi? Elvis, BB King, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Rogers( Father of Country Music), R L Burnside, Sam Hurt, Fred McDowell, Faith Hill, and the list goes on.

You tell him, Mrgrowl!
But perhaps Duane was just having a bad day. Maybe one of those Texas tumbleweeds rolled up his ass that morning.
