I love em both, but in the end it depends on your personal preferences, if youre more into the Stones or more into Led Zeppelin. I for one can say that PG has a lot of great songs, but some songs that leave me a bit cold while on Exile theres simply nothing that leaves me cold (not even I Just Wanna See His Face!!!). A Led Zeppelin fan might see it exactly the other way.

apples vs. oranges

But I do love 'em both! Does Ian Stewart appear on both?

Yes he does. On Boogie With Stu. Plus parts of PG were recorded at Stargroves.

And I prefer Exile.

C'mon!!! Exile On Main Street is so much better than any Led Zep release, let alone Physical Graffiti, which isn't really anything special, to b blunt.

Being a Stones freak I prefer exile by far but I did hear (down by the seaside ) on the radio the other day for the first time in years. I thought it sounded awesome. Although I beleive it was actually recorded for LZ III

exile is SO MUCH BETTER then pg to me! infact it's rude to even dare to compare..
;-)

i really love some of ZEPS work. i admire jimmy page and bonham (awesome).
but the huge success of Led Zeppelin will always be a mistery to me...since their music is not really radio friendly (wich of course is also good) and they didnt have those big hits (besides stairway and whole lotta love).

It's a difficult call. I prefer The Stones as a band. And Exile's my favourite album, but, but, but Physical Grafitti is awesome too.
I think both albums really show how diverse and brilliant both bands really were. I don't need to disect Exile on here obviously but PG has stompers like The Rover and Kashmir AS WELL AS the likes of Sick Again, In The Light and Black Country Woman. Photo finish, with Exile the winner by a hair's breadth I'd say.

Can't really compare them because Exile is the Stones at their peak and PG is NOT Zeppelin at THEIR peak. It's like asking, Which album is better; Led Zeppelin IV or Goats Head Soup?

NOT Led Zep at their peak? Beg to differ. Nothing wrong with IV at all but PG is 4 sides of class, not just two.

Physical Graffiti is my favorite Zep album. But the Stones are my favorite band and Exile on Mainstreet is my favorite album by anybody. I do think that Physical Graffiti is excellent, but as someone said earlier, it really comes down to personal preferance and for me, Exile is the greatest album ever made.

I'm sure hardcore Zep fans would have a different opinion.

True it is longer but longer doesn't always mean better. Just compare Love You Live to Ya Yas. I think tatters has a point in that Led Zeppelin IV would be a better comparison to Exile than PG. Of course I would rate both Exile and Sticky over any Zeppelin album but that is just my opinion.

It gets worse, the older that you get. No escape from the state of confusion I'm in.

Led Zeppelin have become one of those acts it is considered almost sacriligious to critice, or, even more daringly^, to express an apathy towards!

IMO they've always been shockingly overrated. I remember getting 'Physical Graffiti' due to it's legend and almost holy place in the pantheon of rock'n'roll's greatest albums -- and yawning, I just find quite a bit of it bland and boring.

They have some excellent material, but on the whole, IMO, none of the beauty or depth of the stones' back catalogue, if we're comparing the two.

for me anyway, 'Physical Graffiti' is a C+, Exile is an A +

Christgau gave Exile an A+, Led Zep IV an A, Houses of the Holy an A- and Physical Graffiti a B+. But he's never been exactly what you would call a heavy metal guy.

Christgau wasnt far wrong in this case. PG has many moments of magnificence, but theres some filler on the 2nd album and its a bit over-long.

have to vote for Exile. In the 70s it might have been different since I cant sit through Graffiti w/o "substances"!! still dig Boogie With Stu even if it is just a Ritchie Valens rip off!

put it this way. i can sit through the WHOLE of Exile and admire the songs, the atmosphere, the ambience, the musicianship, the legend

...i cannot sit through ALL of PG. first c.d is fine to sit through, have to skip many on the second disc...also, it just doesn't have that 'feel' or mystery Exile has.

and it doesn't have Jagger, Richards, Taylor, Wyman and Watts smileys with beer

There's no filler on Exile?....Beg to differ......But they both belong in your desert island collection and get lots of play by me. With a great deal of Satisfaction.

They're both on my list of favorite albums, but Exile beats PG pretty handily.
