Actually just got back from some Christmas shopping. And actually it was a lot easier and quicker than I thought. I think this is down to two things:

1. Most people are already finished shopping because they are more organised than Mr. Jimmy.

2. A lot of internet purchases.

Will be with the family for christmas, about 30 miles outside London.

Tonight however, it's a festive gig with the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Tribute band in the world - 'The Rollin' Stoned' !!

A few people on here are going - Beast, Paulywaul, ManofWealthAndTaste, Bar Room Queen, Adrian - L...

"Will Be With Family" may lead some to burst out in songs of joy and deer, others to count how many tranquilizers they've hoarded in recent months...

I'm sorry to hear your loss. My father, who is gravely ill, will be receiving his thrice weekly dialysis on Christmas...Last year he was rushed to hospital Xmas eve. So I try to catch whatever 'spirit' I can, usually thanks to a friend, or music.

I was going to say that I will be playing Stones and opening the fridge for my Xmas beverages, but after reading some of your posts i feel lousy and might go and visit a stranger in hospital. Cheers all

Having the family over, all the kids. We are cooking cookies today and I am off to buy the wine for the meal. House is a mess with Christmas wrapping all over the place. We are also going to try to cook duck for the first time, hope that works out. Merry Christmas to all--hope Santa is good to you.....Chris (Maryland, USA)

smile: don't get me started, i think you mean.
even 10-year-olds realize that there's more than one festival celebrated around this time of year,
and that it might be "crap" to suggest that people who celebrate something other than Christmas should be disregarded.
(ever consider how "HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL MY FRIENDS" sounds to someone of another faith?
what - suddenly we aren't friends?? gee.) (and yeah yeah: we know how "touchy" we are.)

so enjoy whatever festivities groove you, including but not limited to
happy Christmas to whom it may concern - how's that.

So what other festival are we supposed to celebrate on 25th December?

Re: Whats this Happy Holidays thing

Do not think WHISKEY is talking about "around this time of year" (some vague time period) but more specifically the dates of 24/25th of December which make up Christmas Eve and Christmas to all Christians except the ORTHODOX which celebrate it a few weeks later. To be 100% accurate here I did an internet search of the "interfaith calender" 2007 and this is what I found pertaining to the largest religions on the planet.

DECEMBER 18th - Hajj (mandatory visit to the Holy city of Mecca, Arabia by all Muslims who are financially and physically able to do the journey) begins for our Muslim friends (Islam)

DECEMBER 20th - EID AL ADHA - a major day for Muslims (Islam)

DECEMBER 22th - Winter Solstice/Yule- Christian/Wicca/Neo Pagan

DECEMBER 24th - CHRISTMAS EVE - Christians
DECEMBER 25th - CHRISTMAS DAY - Christians

Now the only other thing I can find during this period involving one of the worlds major religions (top 10) is DECEMBER 8th - BODHI DAY (Rohatsu) - celebrated by BUDDISTS.
We also have HANUKKAH way back on December 5th - 12th - celebrated by the Jewish faith but that is not one of the top 10 in numbers worldwide (see breakdown below) It gets a lot of attention so I will include it.

Here's a breakdown of the size of the world's Major Religions:

# 1. CHRISTIANITY: 2.1 BILLION (33% of the world's population)
# 2. ISLAM: 1.5 BILLION (21%)
# 3. SECULAR/AGNOSTIC/ATHEIST: 1.1 BILLION (16%)
# 4. HINDUISM: 900 MILLION (14%)
# 5. CHINESE TRADITIONAL RELIGION: 395 MILLION (6%)
# 6. BUDDHISM: 375 MILLION (6%)
# 7. PRIMAL - INDIGENOUS: 300 MILLION (6%)
# 8. AFRICAN TRADITIONAL: 100 MILLION (6%)
# 9. SIKHISM; 23 MILLION (0.36%)
#10. JUCHE: 19 MILLION (no info given)
------------------------- there's the top 10 world religions

#11. SPIRITISM: 15 MILLION (no info given)
#12. JUDAISM: 14 MILLION (0.22%)

So, to summarize, the second half of December looks like a major religious period (from the stats/numbers, using simple logic) for Christians and for Muslims. So Merry Christmas to all the IORR's and hope the Muslim IORR's had a great EID AL ADHA a few days ago. Cheers, a pretty non religious, but brought up kinda/slightly Catholic, Helter (making it "Real" for my IORR peeps)

Its Happy Christmas and NOTHING else.

I work for the Civil Service with coleauges of many faiths. I don't know anyone there who doesn't recognize this month as being Christmas.

Its the politicians in White Hall who get their knickers in a twist over how to advertise this period.

Re: Whats this Happy Holidays thing

This is how the world looks like, population in million people:

China : 1400
India : 1100
USA : 300
Indonesia : 230
Russia : 140
Japan : 130

Plus another 1-2 million people.
Christmas is a religious holiday.
Some people are Christian but others are not.
Happy Holidays is just a generic and respectful way
of saying "have a great time, wherever you live in the world".
I do believe in respect and recommend everyone on IORR to
be respectful and have a great time, wherever you live!

True Al, that's the way it was when I was a little kid growing up in the states - pretty cut and dry. But a shift has happened in the last maybe decade, especially with the US Media, where MERRY CHRISTMAS is being replaced by HAPPY HOLIDAYS and other such "politically correct" phrases.... I don't get it and don't know what's/who's behind it but it's definitely turning into a big deal in the states - it pisses a lot of people off (and I don't blame them) but somebody's first gotta get to the root of the whole problem and how this thing started... you mentioned advertising and the disagreements that go along with it during this period.... probably has a lot to do with it, money... it's ALWAYS about money in the states when you get to the bottom of things, seems like that to me these days....

Merry Christmas IORR

I've finished at work until the 27th now, the Christmas tree will go up tonight and now I'm done with driving for the evening I'm going to have a glass of wine (just to check that it's drinkable when Mr Stargroves gets home from work you understand).

So now I'm doing the Christmas thing I'd like to wish all IORRians a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year with Shine A Light and maybe some concert dates to look forward to. Thank you to bv for a site that means I've vicariously followed each tour date with setlist and reviews, and to all of you, whether you post stunning photos of the band, post "if only Mick Taylor... fill in the blank" threads or just torment Mr Gazza, who can't help secretly liking Sweet Neo Con, thanks.

For Christmas, here is a card with a dumb Norwegian blonde on it for you all, I hope you like it:
