A Smaller, Better Bang
Posted by: hoodooyouvoodoo ()

I just finally got around to editing ABB into a traditional5 tracks a side album. I think it's a vast improvement.

Side one
Rough Justice
Let me Down Slow
Rain Fall Down
Back of My hand
Streets of Love

Side two
She Saw Me Coming
Oh No, Not You Again
Laugh, I Nearly Died
Look What the Cat Dragged In
Under the Radar

Try it. Each track sounds better when forced to occupy a spot in an old fashioned LP style track listing, instead of the shapeless CD format, IMHO.Hope you enjoy.

I know some people like 'It Won't Take Long' but I don't!

juiced up and sloppy

Always a matter of personal taste but (imo) 'It Won't Take Long' is an infinitely better track than say 'Look What The Cat Dragged In'.
Juiced up and sloppy? I'd say sharp opening guitar, big, crashing drums and a great fluid vocal from Jagger. But as I say it's all about opinions so I guess you could have a million permutations of ABB which makes the whole thing a bit pointless. You could probably do it with any Stones album...or any album for that matter.

"I'll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon."

What are you complaining about? That they released 16 tracks?

You are like a spoiled kid that´s overwhelmed with gifts.

To all those who want to shrink that great album - what would
be left of VL then? An E.P.?

Contrast of "Back of My Hand" right next to "Steets of Love" is interesting

Kind of like crime against...I dunno...peace

yes I would rather have 10 decent racks that make a coherent album than 16 thrown together, several of which are only considered worthy of release because there's more room on a CD

its a more satisfying listen this way!

i see streets of love as a syrupy dessert after the somewhat piquant back of my hand - works perfectly.

and yes, voodoo lounge is much better like this:

Side One: Side Two
Love is Strong Out of Tears
You Got me Rocking I Go Wild
New Faces The Worst
Moon is Up Brand New Car
Thru and Thru Sweethearts Together

just my opinion...but burn'em and see!

juiced up and sloppy

A great album would be left if they had only released 8 or 9 of the 14 songs and keep the rest in the vaults so that we could be eagerly anticipating ABB session bootlegs. Too much filler material is too much ...

I don't agree- 2 years on and I am still listening to ABB frequently.

I can even stomach Sweet Neocon (I know the lyrics are bad) If they had given us 10 tracks, we would all be saying 'we wait 8 years and all we get is 10 tracks!'

Well... hoodooyouvoodoo is proposing an ABB without This Place Is Empty...
And a Voodoo Lounge without Blinded By Rainbows.
What's up next ? A Stripped without Like a Rolling Stone, maybe...

Like cutting out and dropping a part of the human history... let's say... XXth century without 1988 because we don't like it...

Is this the same guy who also:

1. Changed the color of the album cover of the Beatles White album from white to purple?

2. Replaced all the K's with P's on everything associated with the band KISS because it sounds funnier and is seemingly more appropriate to the band's image?

3. Trimmed Exile on Main St in to a single 10-song album?

4. Edited most Pink Floyd songs down to 2 minutes 15 seconds each.

5. Made a Led Zep compilation disc with all the songs they sing with the word "baby" in it...

6..........

"Edited most Pink Floyd songs down to 2 minutes 15 seconds each"

Sounds like a result to me!!!

Talk about shooting a guy down in flames. I think he has a valid point.

The CD is over long and it is interesting to see what he thinks it would be like if released as a 10 track LP.......

Some of these might be valid: for example Zeppelin did use the word "Baby" in alot of songs, and call me a heretic, but I think there is some filler on Exile. I like the album, dont get me wrong, but i think it could be tighter and more coherent sans a few songs.

My version has the whole album in sequence, follwed by Under The Radar, Don't wanna Go Home and Ending with Hurricane. Much better in my opinion!!!!

Great Post. I agree

I also fully agree. I simply like ABB - I can't lp myself. I am sorry...

Okay the "lp" in the previous message should be "help". F*****g keyboard!

>> the "lp" in the previous message <<

i thought the lp was quite endearing, given the context :E
(and i'll stick with ABB as the Stones gave it to us. its flow is quirky in a good way,
and none of the proposals to trim it ever agree on what to change anyway, so ... so i'm putting it on way loud right now)

Oh yea, you are right With Sssoul! So I meant "lp" then! :-)

I do take your point, but I remember a Japanese (I think) promo of Voodoo Lounge which was particularly popular with a lot of fans because the stripped down version was actually a stronger album than the full version.

You do YOUR album your way and let the Rolling Stones do THEIR album their way.

This is known as the "artists' perogative."

Suggest you write Rick Rubin and ask for a job where you can have some input on various new artists.

I edited Who Do You Voodoo, Leaving out what I considered filler and came up with a 35 minute album of consistently good material. Ironically this was the approximate length of their great vinyl LPs. I think they feel, since the advent of CDs, they must give the public a near hour of material or be labeled ripoffs by the critics. An album is not like a box of cereal. M<ore is not always better. All but a few double vinyl Lps would have been better as a single. Its hard enough to create 35 minutes of solid new music. Including lesser songs to fill time is detrimental to the artist and listener.

i dont listen to the cd that often because it's not that great of an album but when you tamper with an artist's album , it's no different than the record company that gave us the american versions of aftermath and between the buttons

I knew i was right....as least about how to start a fight!

as for Blinded by rainbows....don't even start me. Only non-english spakers can be forgiven for having any time for that...embarrassing...

anyway, in case anyone doubts my love of the band..I'm about to go out with my mates in our band 'Milking the Lemon' and as usual our version of Honky Tonk Women (done in Open G naturally) will rock the joint!

I wouldn't change it. When it first came out I enjoyed listening to it. It was on rotation on my car CD player for about 3 months. I will admit by the 3rd month I was selective about which songs I would play, but I figured everyone's taste is a little different. I do feel the Rolling Stones have put out worse records than ABB.

I'm still confused.....lol

I wouldn't want to skip any of the songs on ABB. I would rather add 2 tracks - Under The Radar and Don't Wanna Go Home.

It's completely different. When a record company does it, it's an official release and it affects hundreds of thousands of people in the record-buying public. When an individual does it, it's only for their personal use and doesn't affect anyone else. It also doesn't change the fact that the official release is still the official release and is still the one available to the public as the band intended.

I wouldn't want to lobby for shorter albums on this board, because they might make them shorter next time. I think it's better that everybody can skip freely than if the material that many might like is left in the archive. As opposed to analogue players, CD players got the program function, with which everybody can construct their preferred playlist.
B-sides can't be B-sides anymore because of the demise of the single format, so these songs must go elsewhere to be heard.
