Well...
1. It's obvious that the man who started the don't regard ABB too highly. Maybe his views on the 60s output is different...who knows
2. Some people want this, some people want that - so "people" and "him" are not synonyms
3. I don't see anything wrong about making your own compilation. There's some songs I can't listen to either.

right on the mark, Erik! and to add some fuel to the fire - I would trade a perfect quality version of, let's say, Beautiful Delilah (BBC) or Reelin' & Rockin' (Chess Sessions) for Dangerous Beauty, Driving Too Fast or Neo-Con anytime!!!

It's called a "Beggars Banquet"
They want to have everything available on the table so they can choose from the buffet.

ok so I started it. and i do like AB.
my point is that when LPs were 5 tracks a side, it provided a structure that gae the music added focus eg the ballad at the end of side one (MMotel, Angie) the epic in the middle of side two (sister morphine, winter)

because of two accidents of technology, namely CD and downloads, albums just sort of ramble on in instead:

The CD creates an extra 20 minutes of space that bands are tempted to fill with earlier.

because of the download culture jagger isnt concerned to make too much of a coherent whole-album listen, knowing that tracks will be picked off in bits anyway.

restoring the two sides of 5/6 tracks brings backsome of the lost focus imho.
you may not agree but thats my reasoning.

and my comment about non-english speakers is that blinded by rainbows has such a toe-curlingly embarrassing lyric, you'd need to be a non-english speaker to enjoy it!!

juiced up and sloppy

I'm with hoodoo and I thought the tracklist/structure for an edited "ABB" looked pretty interesting--even if I personally would never have used "Look What The Cat..."

Weak material dilutes the impact of strong material. And while I sympathize with those who want to hear EVERYTHING, I find that the completist thing works better with b-sides, rarities releases and boots.

Editing and shaping material into (the now-dying) album format is/was a key part of the artistic process. It's about making thoughtful judgements and having perspective on one's work. Or, in the case of, say, "Exile," about knowing that many strange parts can add up to a beyond-brilliant whole.

But again, more is not always "more" or "better." I can count literally dozens of Stones tracks that would be seen in a completely different light (better and sometimes worse) if they were moved from their locations on their various albums.

We could still get to hear the whole thing. Nowadays, if you buy a CD-single you get the actual song + three or four remixes.....something that I think is not always the Stones forté. It worked with "Miss You" and "Undercover" - but that is it, I'm afraid (IMHO I hastily add *s*)

Now - they could take the three or four songs that would be superflous and make them b-sides. That way people would be really happy to get something different - without having too high expectations....and I would not feel such an idiot for wanting to have all the singles nonetheless ;-)

I've made a similar thread myself...and it is hard. Personally, the only song on ABB I could live without would be "Neocon"......to me the song destroys the flow of the album, which I consider to be a masterpiece. I've just had a few weeks where it has been part of my daily diet ;-)

But.....back in the day "ABB" would have been a double album....just like "VL" and "BtB". None of these albums would have fitted the normal vinyl format.

They are all available as double albums. They still make 'em, you know.

Consider it a riposte, albeit a somewhat delayed one
