Mick Jagger is one of rock's most underrated lyricists. Monkey Man, from 1969's Let It Bleed, is perhaps his funniest moment. Playing up to the group's increasingly degenerate image, he sings mockingly, "I'm a fleabit, peanut monkey / All my friends are junkies / Well, that's not really true." Or was it?
Monkey Man is a medium tempo song with lots of instrumental work,which gives Keith plenty of room to work.
Mick begins yelling like an engaged chimp at the end as,again all hell breaks loose.
By golly we have all had a go at trying to interpretate exactly what Micks lyrics on 'Monkey Man' are really all about without much success.
Perhaps Micks tongue in cheek lyrics are never meant to be understood whereas it is the power of the song that is most important thing.

several posters brought up the same evidence, which this guy has some solid research on, and he links it to a very stones-friendly sociological thesis. Most academic articles I've read about the stones have been negative, so this was a nice change. It may be because it's from 1973.

I think its about a someone who is addicted (monkey on his back) perhaps to drugs, women, rock n roll, or all three...kinda like the Stones themselves.
