The history of "Slave" (input please)

I am always very intrigued by the song Slave. One of the best riffs they ever created in my opinion (maybe there will be some argument about who wrote te riff, that's why I put "they" in this sentence).

There are so many persons involved in this jam and so many bootlegged versions that it is hard to keep count.

The song saw the light of day in Rotterdam (where I was born too, so maybe that's a reason for me being intrigued) in january 1975. Jeff Beck was around at the time, just like Billy Preston was and Wayne Perkins. The working title of the song was Vagina at the time (...oops, maybe there is another reason to be intrigued?),
In 1981 they uncovered the song and Sonny Rollins was there, just like Pete Townshend, who is rumoured to provide nothing more than his voice to the song.

They rehearsed the song before the B2B tour and before the Licks tour, and some claim before the ABB tour, but never brought it on stage.

On the remastered version of Tattoo You in 1994 they put on a longer version than on the original LP.

Now can someone tell me who's playing what on this last version?

Keith on guitar, Preston on organ, Bill on bass, Rollins on sax..MJ on lead vox, Pete on bvoc. No Ronnie from what I know. 6 and a half minutes of bliss, IMO

SLAVE
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Do it, do it, do it, do it
Don't wanna be your slave

Twenty four hours a day
Hey, why don't you go down to the supermarket
Get something to eat, steal something of the shelves
Pass by the liquor store
Be back about quarter to twelve

Don't want to be your slave
Baby go, baby go, baby go
Do it yeah

The Lyric "Be back about quarter to twelve" refers to the tailgate preparations before the football games start.

Here are 2 un-offical versions. One is from Place Pigale Disc 1 and the other is from a Black and Blue outtakes disc (I don't know the name). I believe JB is on the Place Pigale version or maybe both of these. I don't have access to the cover art for eiter version:

Slave-- Place Pigale

Slave --Alt Black and Blue

My disclaimer:
I accept no responsibility for the content, quality,or accuracy of this post. 99% of us were probably not at the sessions so we really dont know what happened, when they happend, and who did what. For all we know, these could be outtakes from the never-to-happen Beatles Reunion Tour rehersal featuring Keith Relf, Larry Graham, and Waylon Jennings.

Agree - my favorite track off the album. Just a great rolling jam. Sonny Rollins instead of Bobby Keys.

Found a few facts at [www.songfacts.com] .

Here they are:

Originally recorded at the Black And Blue sessions in 1974, this song went on for a while and was called "The Black And Blue Jam" before being reworked for Tattoo You.

Jazz great Sonny Rollins was brought in to play sax.
Pete Townshend from The Who sang backup.

The original version recorded in 1974 featured Billy Preston on organ, Jeff Beck on guitar, and Nicky Hopkins on piano. Their parts were erased when it was reworked.

But you probably knew this already.

I agree about the erasure of JB. I have never been able to tell if he was playing or not.I read somewhere that KR thought that JB's playing wasn;t good so everything he played on was tossed. I heard a version a Freeway Jam which is SUPPOSEDLY from those sessions but it is really poor quality. Unlistenable.

Beck plays on jam versions of this song, but he never played on the final released version. His parts were never erased. The original version of the final released song was about 10 minutes long, and contains overdubs by Rollins and Ron Wood, who does some great guitar fills. This version is my favourite. However, Wood's parts were mostly erased, and the song was edited down to the shorter released version. Pete Townsend does back up vocals, Ollie Brown percussion.

Thanks Mathijis. I really can't tell that it's JB. He probably could have done a lot with that song

Slave features one of the most incredible riffs ever composed, and is an absolute gem. I love, LOVE this song so much.

But I always thought Charlie played drums on it (and it says he does on Keno's website). Is Charlie on this track or not?

he does. Percussion is in addition to drums.

just Like on the 75-76 tour which had charlie on drums and ollie on percussion.

That's what I thought. Just checking, because NOBODY in this thread has mentioned Charlie, and his drumming (as always) is phenomenal and a major reason for the incredible groove of this song!

I'm no Jeff Beck expert when it comes to his playing, but I'm guessing if there was even a stray lick left in the mix of Slave when it came out he would have been ALL OVER The Stones with denying permission to release it and/or a lawsuit.

What I hear on both of these outtakes (actually, it's the same outtake I'm pretty sure, one just has the intro. and a pitch/speed problem) is one guitar -- and it sounds pretty damn identical to the track that got put on "Tattoo You." If it was re-recorded, it was a spot on miracle re-do!

The main riff sounds like Keith a la "Little T & A" intro.

Does the guitar on Slave sound anything like Beck circa. 74-75?

The rest of it is one or two electric pianos and a bass.

Thanks for the input so far.

So there's no Jeff Beck and no Wayne Perkins to be heard on the longer Tattoo You version? And is it a fact that Ronnies parts are not on this final version? Is it just Keith on all guitar parts?

i think it's less than 100% clear that there's no Ronnie at all on it -
depends on who you ask/believe

At least, I haven't been able to identity any guitar from Ronnie in it. I've tried to spot him a thousand times, but all I get is Keith's great, great playing.

One of Charlie's greatest ever performances.

I think it's on "Tattoo Out" and/or "Tattoo You" Sessions.

Hopefully with the speed corrected. THIS version has an additional guitar for sure.
