Stones tracks that feature OTHER PLAYERS on guitar, bass, or drums
Posted by: schillid ()

There's another recent thread -- about "IORR", the song. I know lots of Stones trivia -- too much, I suppose. But I must admit that I didn't know that Kenny Jones is the drummer on IORR! Through iorr.org, I have come to realize in the last year or so that I really don't approach the maniacal Stones database-in-my-brain status of some here...

I started thinking... How about a thread dedicated to other players who play on Stones tracks who aren't well known. I'll start with a few that I know:

You Can't Always Get What You Want (studio version)
Jimmy Miller on drums

One Hit To The Body
Jimmy Page on solo guitar

others?

Bill Plummer plays bass on a few Exile cuts... though bill later disputed the attributions.

are we talking about non-stones who played in place of stones, that is, on "core" instruments? if we're talking about players of additional instruments... it's going to be a long thread.

I meant the former question.

Guitar guests:

Waddy Wachtel on Saint Of Me
Jim Barber on Too Much Blood
Al Perkins on Torn And Frayed
Harvey Mandel on Hot Stuff
Wayne Perkins on Hand Of Fate and Worried About You
Mandel and Perkins on Memory Motel
Dave Mason on Street Fighting Man (sitar-like guitar)
Ry Cooder on Sister Morphine
Ry Cooder on Love in vain (Mandoline)
Many guests on Metamorphosis, and I bet the list is much longer for the original studio records as well. Didn't Pete Townshend play on Tattoo You.

RICHARD "DIDYMUS" WASHINGTON (AMYL NITRATE)

Nicknamed Amyl Nitrate on the credits, Richard Washington was a percussionist working with Dr. John. He participated in the Stones' L.A. sessions for Exile on Main Street and contributed marimbas to Sweet Black Angel.

including Jimmy Page on Heart of Stone; Keith's said he copied Page's guitar on the Stones' version.

and lest we forget, from the number that started this thread: Willie Weeks on bass on IORR.

Nah, he only plays Shehnai. Bill does say in 'Rolling with the Stones' that Dave played guitar on Dear Doctor though, but there only seems to be one acoustic on there and it is most definitely Keith playing that!

Who played lead break on "Memo From Turner"

hey landover, i was under the impression that the lead as well as slide was by ry cooder on that track; someone correct me if i'm wrong please.

also, a tiny bit OT offa your thread; forgive me schillid; but i'd like to post an 'honorable mention' for jack nitsche, so prevalent on piano, hand percussion and arrangement on some of their finest recordings...

we always know stu IS a friggin' stone...and what nicky contributed on record and live is legendary...not to diss the wonderful Mac and Billy Preston contributions live...but i know you're talkin' git, bass and drums here, so i'll keep this ultra short, uh, too late...heh heh...

but jack is on some seminal stones cuts, in more ways than one, rest his soul, and i hope it's not too distracting, nor a hijack, just to mention that.

Jimmy Cliff - backing vocals on Too Rude
Bobby Womack - backing vocals on Harlem Shuffle, guitar on Back To Zero
Ry Cooder - guitar on Sister Morphine

About 6-7 different guys on bass in B2B

Other than Mick, the film version doesn't feature any of the stones. But it's the 'rhythm' guitarist who plays the non slide solo on that film version while Ry keeps on slidin' about.

I can't quite remember his name though, Russ Tillman!?

Re: Wyman on Exile...

He is only credited on 8 of the 18 tracks.

If my memory is right, the other Bass players are Mick Taylor, Keith Richards, Bill Plummer.

I used to own one, erk it took a lot of air to make that thing sound right. May have been because of crappy reeds though.

Here's a quote from Dr. John's book "Under a Hoodoo Moon: The Life of the Night Tripper":

In 1972, soon after my dustup with Bennett Glotzer, I got a call from Keith Richards. “We’re gonna be coming to LA to cut an album,” Keith said. “You want to play?” they needed all kinds of musicians, so I rounded up a crew that included the singers Shirley Goodman and Tami Lynn, my guitarist Shine Robinson, Didimus, and myself.
The sessions with the Stones, which turned into their album ‘Exile on main st’, came out all right. They weren’t necessarily totally stand-up people, but I dug working with them, even though I wasn’t a big fan of their music. I liked the rhythms their drummer, Charlie Watts, was putting down: His style clued me that he had listened to at least some jazz and fonk stuff.
…During these sessions, I came up with the idea to write an album of songs with Earl King for the Stones to wax. The album, to be called ‘Pornographic Blues’, was a takeoff on the raunchy blue versions of popular songs I remembered from the New Orleans clubs and whorehouses after hours, when the hustlers, cons, pimps, and whores came in to carouse at the end of their working evening. Earl King and I wrote handfuls of tunes for the project; later, I got pissed off at the Stones for their ‘@#$%& Blues’, a rip-off of our album concept but with no compensation or credit to me or Earl for the ideas. At the same time, Didimus really got steamed at them because they didn’t give him proper credit for playing on ‘Exile’; they had put down the percussionist’s name as Amyle Nitrate.

hadn't the song "CS Blues" already been recorded and submitted? Maybe Dr. John was deceived by the film title.

how about the notion that Exile was "cut" as an album during these sessions in LA? I do think people tend to inflate the Nellcote myth, whereas many parts of the album were done in LA and also quite earlier than Nellcote, but to say these sessions "turned into" Exile plain and simple is way off.

On the B2B album, there are several bassists besides Darryl Jones: Don Was, Danny Saber, MeShell Ndegeocello (spelling) and the late Jeff Sarli (RIP) on upright bass.
Does it count here that Mick plays quite a few guitars on the ABB album in Ronnie's absence?
