Keith/Jimi - very close tie

Brian May - really got me wanting to learn to play electric guitar

Frank Zappa - totally underestimated and unpredictable

Dave Davies - so underrated, and lives in the shadow of his brother.

Waddy Wachtel - some of the stuff he did with Warren Zevon still blows me away.

Jimmy Page - how he could turn a moronic riff into a great song never ceases to amaze me.

Yes, great
Jorma is also from another planet, so beautiful.
Pete Townshend himself is an endless universe.
I think this is a beautiful topic but to name just three guitar magicians is...well...

Keith - very simply style, i love to play in open g, he's pure genius of rhythm guitar. i think it's very hard to play, invent so easy things with such a feeling

Pete Townshend - great composer and melodist, he uses very unique chords, i like this way of playing guitar

Robert Fripp - genius, frippertronicks, soundscapes - he is one of the few guys that really invented sth new. I admire him for his discipline

I agree with lots of the already mentioned guitarists, but I like to add three more. Robin Trower, Jan Akkerman and Nils Lofgren.

Topic is favorite as opposed to who we think are the best, although they might be the same.

Keith, Angus, Eddie VH.

Has Brian Jones been banned from this list? winking smiley

Like many others, it's hard to pick out just three.

1) Keith - duh!
2) MICK Green - Very unique style of playing. Once you've heard it, you'll never forget it. Influenced Pete T, Jimmy P and Richie B. Pete supposedly nicked the 'wind mill' from Mick after seeing him in the early 60's.
3) Ollie Halsall - Patto/Boxer guitarist. Same reason as Mick. A very destinctinve sound/style. Died several years ago in Spain. May he rest in peace.
4) Wilco Johnson - Dr Feelgood/solo. Love his guitar chords by the handful style. Very manic.
5) Hollywood Fats(RIP) or Kid Ramos - solo/James Harmon Band. I can 'feel it' when they play.

I prefer to listen to people you DON'T hear on the radio. That's where the magic is.

I don't know who Mick Green is, but I've read Townshend interviews where he admits nicking the windmill from Keith Richards. You wouldn't be referring to Peter Green by any chance would you?

1. Steve Howe- won guitarplayer magazine's Best Overall Guitarist the first 5 years in a row it was a category. amazingly precise lap steel, pedal steel and regular slide, classical/nylon, acoustic, 12-string, coral sitar guitar, electric, etc. many times doing several of those in the course of a song. suffers the same fate as slash and alex lifeson in that many folks can't stand the lead singer's voice. inventive, amazingly fluid octave leaps, odd meters, fingerpicking. some of the most original guitar parts ever. not a rawker in the sense of crunchy keef, townsend, page style chords, but much warmer than the other 'technically advanced' players (mclaughlin, morse, fripp). don't know of any other rock guitarist who could entertain a stadium audience as much with solo acoustic instrumentals like 'The Clap' and 'Mood For A Day'.

vid link

-essential listening: Yessongs live (the awe-inspiring guitar parts to 'Siberian Khatru' and 'Close to The Edge' will make you feel completely not-worthy of composing/playing anything like them, but please keep playing, you'll get over it)

2. Mr Gilmour. everyone knows the Floyd. experimental, psychadelic, minor blues with incredible empathy. precursor to the Edge thru his signature use of delays.
beautiful bends, whammy work, sustain, serious slide.

-essential listening: Floyd's Animals cd ('Dogs','Pigs') and the songs 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' and 'Echoes'.

3. Jimmy Page; enough said.

edited to add vid link for Howe solo.
