The 5 Signs that show the Stones are fading away....
Posted by: brass olive ()

No offence (but I'm sure the die-hards will take it) but was thinking every band eventually gets to a stage they are dying....in the Stones' case they just keep going....

Anyway I've put together 5 moments that make me think they are gone/going....

Was wondering if guys could put in your nominations...

In no particular order (IMO):

1. Euro Licks Tour - poorly performed
2. Rocks Off on the Live Licks Album - terrible editing (no caring and unbelievable).
3. Jagger wearing a "madonna-esque" head microphone - pathetic.
4. Timberlake appearing on-stage with the band - no more to say.
5. Jagger/Richards songwriting skills from 2000 onwards...

...special mentions to Ronnie Wood acting like Keith from 1981 onwards...

thoughts?

1. not aware of. but ive seen clips of them in the 70,s and they were sloppy. also seen clips recently and they were great, so you have to judge the whole package.
2. i agree, but they have done other songs recently far better than before. "she was hot" an example so you cant judge just 1 song, look at the whole package again.
3. just let jagger do his own thing, as long as his performance is up to scratch.
4. i agree, but it wont happen again.
5. disagree a bigger bang was thier best album since tattoo you.

GEEZ....hostile crowd here....

perhaps my words came across a bit harsh...

ok I'll relax them:

1. Euro Licks - best Tour ever
2. Rocks Off on the live licks album - brilliant !! Why don't we cut the best bit of the song ? Superb editing...
3. Jagger looking like Madonna ? Why not - she's been a successfull artist...and both are sluts...
4. Timberlake being ostage with the Stones - He's OK - he's hip at the moment..it's image we want...
5. Jagger/Richards songwriting skills - OK they are old...I'll give them a break but Keith especially has written some great songs...especially rock songs !

will that pass ?

Must not have been at the 29 August, '03 show.

1: Euro Licks Tour: Can't say I agree with "poorly performed". I enjoyed all the shows I attended and thought they and we were enjoying ourselves.

2.Live Licks was on the whole a total lazy mess of an offering. Except a few gems (Worried About You, Nearness Of You). Shame on them!

3.I don't like the head microphone either, but who cares?

4.The Timberlake thing was just silly fun. Who cares?

5.The songwriting in my opinion has just gone tits up. They need to write more often and in different styles. Not just 3 ballads, 4 rockers and a Keith number. I understand they are'nt 20 years old anymore but come on branch out lads.

Well these hardly signs of the band "fading" but more like personal gripes you have towards the band. The fact that Rocks Off was edited poorly on "Live Licks" is hardly a sign that the band's performance quality is nosediving. Mick's hands-free microphone is not even close to a real piece of evidence that the band is fading into oblivion.

None of these "signs" are reasons any Stones fan (even you) would give as to why you wouldn't see them again. "Hey, you going to see the Stones this weekend?" "No way man, Mick uses a microphone wrapped around his head for 3 songs--the Stones are old news." I don't think so. I'm not even sure why you would assume they are "fading" when they are still successful at selling tickets to arenas and stadiums in many countries around the world.

Let's bring it back to perspective. Just because Timberlake sang one song with them does not translate to the Stones falling off the face of the earth.

Thanks for the edit BV. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. IMO this forum is not the right place. If you don´t like the Stones any more, then fine. But this is a celebratory forum for the greatest rock n roll band in the world.

I've been going to see them since 1970 and each time , including August at the 02, have been fantastic. They seem to have got better as stage performers through the 90's and up until now, proberbly because of the stage sets, but I have not really seen any decline! Roll on 2008.

If not here then where? The initial post was exaggerated and misdirected, is all. This board cannot just be lollipops and rainbows about the Stones.

A total of 2.2 million people saw the Stones doing 50 shows in Europe this summer + last summer. I don't think that is a sign of a band going under. Like Mick just said in an interview this week - They will tour as long as they and people enjoy it. If you don't enjoy it anymore may be you are getting too old or too bored or simply need something else to enjoy in life. There's more to life than the Stones, but many people, and new generations, do still want to see and hear the Stones.

... and just to comment on the "top five" list...

I don't agree at all.

> 2. Rocks Off on the Live Licks Album - terrible editing (no caring and unbelievable).

So what?

> 3. Jagger wearing a "madonna-esque" head microphone - pathetic.

I don't agree at all.

> 4. Timberlake appearing on-stage with the band - no more to say.

Four minutes ago on stage four years ago.
Not important, and no worry at all for me.

> 5. Jagger/Richards songwriting skills from 2000 onwards...

I like the new album i.e. A Bigger Bang.

I am missing the SIGNIFICANT proof of the declining band.
Like the crowds going from 2 million into 200,000 per tour,
or half of the tour being cancelled due to bad ticket sales,
or people leaving in the middle of the shows.
I am missing the real signs of the declining band.
Am I blind or is the band still on top?

I like that word Prat. The (2) Who use it in my favorite tune from their new album. The song is "Man in a Purple Dress". Fantastic! However, The Stones aren't dying yet. I won't let them!!!

1. I would agree with the generalization that the Stones live since 1989 cannot match their live performances in their prime, but there are individual exceptions to this rule so I don't think anyone can label an entire leg of a tour as a failure.
2. I dislike the edits on LIVE LICKS, but fail to see how it reflects on the band in any way other than their lack of quality control over what is viewed as product. The same situation exists with RARIITIES and Jagger's new BEST OF.
3. This is just plain silly. I stopped caring about the band's onstage appearance by the time my balls dropped.
4. I would hardly limit it to Justin Timberlake. I generally dislike onstage guests with anyone. Timberlake is just one of a long line of people that didn't deserve to share a stage with the Stones and it goes back to 1972. Throwing bottles at performers isn't the answer.
5. I've generally been harsh on ABB and still feel that way, but together and apart Jagger & Richards are still writing songs I think are great (Too Far Gone, Old Habits Die Hard, Biggest Mistake, Dangerous Beauty, Laugh I Nearly Died, Under the Radar, Look What the Cat Dragged In, and Let Me Down Slow spring to mind).

The only valid sign the Stones are fading away is the simple fact that Time is No Longer On Their Side. Everything else is just quibbling.

don't agree with the starter of this thread, but the stones are not #1 anymore in Europe, at least not in their biggest markets: Germany and Holland.
2006 didn't sell well and in Germany stages had to been moved to the other side/\

Give me the names of 2-3 other artists who can charge an average of 100 Euro per ticket all over Europe in 14 months touring and get a crowd of 2.2 million people, and I will agree, but fact is there are absolutely NO other performers that can do so. Names? And an actual tour that made any better figues. This is about facts not about "I think" you know. There's nobody, absolutely nobody. Only the Stones.

This sounds like it belongs with the 'cringe' thread...

"Give me the names of 2-3 other artists who can charge an average of 100 Euro per ticket all over Europe in 14 months touring and get a crowd of 2.2 million people, and I will agree"

Not that I am saying that the Stones are fading but these figures mean very little to me. Its about the music, Britney Spears lip syncs, as do many others and they may sell tickets for their shows but doesn't mean their any good .

so for yo it's only about the money? don't think it's sad that they don't sell out a stadium in Germany so they have to turn the stage and stil charge 100 euro and forget about their fanbase younger then 40 without kids and a fat belly or a job that allows alot of travel
you are really naive, really, really naivesmiling smiley
