1971, the ultimate year of studio rock albums?
Posted by: wesley ()
Date: September 13, 2007 19:06

Just re-organized my cd`s. The year 1971 must have been a way cool for every rock fan. Not that I knew it, I was only 6 yrs and my parents didn´t listen to that sort of music.

This list speaks for itself
Sticky Fingers
Deep Purple: Fireball
Led Z number 4
Uriah Heep: Look at Yourself
The Who: Who´s Next

What a number of masterpieces! .. And to continue, expanding from focusing to rock music, Marvin Gaye: What´s Going On
What´s your golden year of studio albums?

Wesley

Wasn't born yet but there were some great albums from that year. A few that come to mind that you didn't mention..

Imagine – Lennon
Aqualung – Jethro Tull
Meddle – Pink Floyd
LA Women – Doors
(not studio) Fillmore East – Allmans
Grateful Dead – self titled

you can make a pretty good case for proabably any year between 1967-1972....I'd be more inclined to go with 1968, given it's the only year Dylan released a worthy album during that stretch....

I agree, but somehow I´m obsessed to 1971 right now..
Just to put some more heat:

Rod Stewart: Every Picture Tells a Story
T-Rex: Electric Warrior
those are probably not great "classics", but sure are damn good albums, which have tendency to grow during the years. And that´s a good sign, never get tired of listening these

Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
Beatles - Revolver
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Mothers of Invention - Freak out!
Kinks - Face to Face
Jacques Brel - Ces gens-la
Miles Davis - Miles smiles

Yes, and I realize how much the rock journalists appreciate that era. The Beatles has almost all the top 10 albums with Sgt Pepper, Revolver and White Album. There you go, different opinions, thanks for yours!

Best year in music history (1969 and 1970 have strong cases too). Not just albums, but singles also. To many to list at work, maybe a few when I get home. Here's a couple though:

"Do You Know What I Mean"
"Dragging The Line"

"No Anchovies, Please"

What about Ram by McCartney. That came out in 71. And how could anybody forget A Nod's As Good As A Wink! Not so sure about Uriah Heep's Look At Yourself though.

Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood
Don Henley - The End of the Innocence
The Cult - Sonic Temple
Fine Young Cannibals - The Raw and the Cooked
Elton John - Sleeping with the Past
Aerosmith - Pump
Bang Tango - Psycho Cafe
Alice Cooper - Trash
Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits
LA Guns - Cocked & Loaded
Madonna - Like A Prayer
Paul McCartney - Flowers in the Dirt
Skid Row - Skid Row
Tesla - Great Radio Contreversy
Whitesnake - Slip of the Tongue
White Lion - Big Game
Nirvana - Bleach
Kiss - Hot in the Shade

Honorable mentions from the same year...

B52's - Cosmic Thing
Pat Benatar - Best Shots
Belinda Carlisle - Runaway Horses
Dangerous Toys - Dangerous Toys
Gloria Estefan - Cuts Both Ways
Extreme - Extreme
Great White - Twice Shy
Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation
Milli Vanilli - Girl You Know It's True
Mr. Big - Mr. Big
Stevie Nicks - The Other Side of the Mirror
Roy Orbison - Mystery Girl
Scorpions - Best of Rockers & Ballads
Warrant - Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich
Neil Young - Freedom
Faith No More - The Real Thing

I know I'm gonna catch hell for the Milli Vanilli but man when it came out, it was a great album!!

"What´s your golden year of studio albums? "

1993

Breeders "Last Splash"
The Humpers "Positively Sick On 4th Street"
Grotus "Slow Motion Apocalypse"
Melvins "Houdini"
Nirvana "In Utero"
Anthrax "Sound Of White Noise"
Belly "Star"
PJ Harvey "Rid Of Me"
Therapy? "Nurse" (it might have come out in 92 or 92 in the UK and 93 in the US)
Ethyl Meatplow "Happy Days Sweetheart"
Jesus Jones "Perverse"
Jesus Lizard "Liar"
Fight "War Of Words"

Actually 1991-1994 was an absolutely amazing era for music and the best time as a music fan to be alive.

1980 was also good; as was 1973-74. 1967 not too bad either.
