Yep, a GOOD year...

All the Young Dudes (Mott The Hoople)--I think...was recorded in 71. Just busted out that last week...One of the Boys is a MONSTER---(..he used to grow his hair to just scare the teacher, goodness gracious, ain't little Johnny a creature...")

Love that line, as I lived it.

Wasnt this also T Rex big year?

Many Swedish important releases then; among many - Kebnekajse.
Gasolin' debut-album was released in 1971.
As was Thin Lizzy's.

I admit I've only been skimming these posts, but I don't recall seeing David Bowie's Hunky Dory mentioned as being a highlight of 1971.

And Macca's Ram, I believe, was not taken very seriously upon its release. I love it, and always have, but George, John and, a few years later, Ringo, were better appreciated as ex-Beatles, until Band on the Run came along and McCartney got some well-earned respect.

Wow - forgot about Killer. What a Killer album, if you'll excuse the pun. Halo of Flies is unbelievable. Probably the most Who-like track Pete Townshend never wrote. And the punks all loved this album. You Drive Me Nervous and Under My Wheels are songs up there with Detroit's finest. Alice Cooper always gets overlooked when people mention the great Detroit bands like The MC5 and The Stooges. If anyone out there who vaguely likes punky, trashy rock hasn't heard this then you should check this album out immediately.

Marvin Gaye- What's going on. Not really a rock album but still worth a mention.

Alice Cooper is not from Detroit..........I went to his high school in Arizona.

PART ONE: READY, WILLING, AND UNSTABLE
The Alice Cooper story begins on February 4, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, when Vincent Furnier, displaying the ear-splitting vocal calisthenics that would serve him well in the decades to come, came kicking and screaming into an unsuspecting world. After several years of living in the oppressive shadow of massive automobile factories, the family decided to change their environment by relocating to the desert ambience of Phoenix, Arizona.

I recently listened to some hard rock LP:s, then I realized they were nearly all from the same year, 1980...a very fine year too:
AC/DC - Back in Black
Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell
Judas Priest - British Steel
Motörhead - Ace of Spades
Rush - Permanent Waves
Whitesnake - Ready an´ Willing

What about 1973?
Quadrophenia
DARK SIDE OF THE MOON
Houses of the Holy
Ziggy Stardust
The Beatles-Red and Blue Albums (still their best, "best of", IMO)
Billion Dollar Babies
Ooh La La
Goodvye Yellow Brick
and alright, Goats Head Soup (though personally its not one of my favorite stones albums)

71, 72 and 73 all very good years.

72: EXILE, Ziggy Stardust, (sorry Happy Jack, 73 was Aladdin Sane and the very wonderful Pin Ups), The Slider and their masterpiece - the first Roxy Music album.

"1980 was also good; as was 1973-74. 1967 not too bad either." (moi, above)

Ozzy Blizzard Of Oz & Dinamit & loads of Swedish debuts... & Lizzy's underrated Chinatown. Maiden's first. Etc...

Love It To Death is also from 1971. That album is a value at twice the price just for Caught In A Dream. Awsome guitar sound from Michael Bruce and Glen Buxton.

I think album rock music was at a peak around this point although you could make a case for any year between 68-73. Personally though i think music reached its peak singles wise in 1966.

I just realized your list omits the Kinks Muswell Hillbillies, also from 1971 and one of the best and their best albums. SOme great stuff (20th Century Man, title track, complicated life, alcohol, etc) there.

This was not a poll thread. However, just for fun, I counted "votes" given in discussion. I interprited the votes as follows:
- one person could give "votes" to several years
- if the suggestion was "any year between 1967-73" I put one "vote" to each year

So, don´t take this too seriously, the statistical analysis is very poor..

THE ULTIMATE YEAR OF STUDIO ROCK ALBUMS according to IORR message board is

1971 with 14 "votes",

these got mentioned during discussion too
1973 with 4 "votes"
1972 with 3 "votes"
1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1980 got 2 "votes" each
1954, 1964, 1974, 1988, 1989 and 1993 got 1 "vote" each
