Well, let's see, I'll try and answer your questions...The Stones never went away and kept making shitloads of money for the past 38 years. The Beatles broke up a year later and half of them are now dead. Simon and Garfunkel broke up a few years later, but enjoy the odd reunion or not. CCR split up in 1972, but Fogerty keeps enjoying successful comebacks and his old rhythm section tries to carry on without him (don't ask). Dylan never went away and still goes through periods of being hailed a genius followed by periods where he is derided for sounding like Froggy from the Little Rascals. Hendrix died a couple years later and it was pretty nasty, but people still listen to him. Otis is still dead, but hang in there if you're expecting something. The Doors still sorta continue even though Morrison died around the same time as Hendrix and it was pretty nasty, too. Stevie is still blind and lost most of his talent years ago, but you missed some great music in the seventies. Motown is as dead as the US auto industry, probably some weird correlation there. Janis died along with Jimi and Jim, pretty messy too, but then she always was. Lots of stuff happened in music between 1969 and 2007. As for Fergie, I think her prime was around the time she married Prince Andrew, but I still sorta fancy her.

Get off the bandwagon, put down the 'andbook, (as Alex Turner sings)

loads of good stuff out there, if you're not too lazy to look for it.

switch off MTV, and go discover

For the record, I am not living in the past…I was born in ’76. There are certainly “good” bands around now, but no one I would rank with those mentioned above. Moreover, the good stuff now is not popular and therefore not significant culturally.

Absolute Tosh, say that to any regular reader of the NME, Q mag etc. Massive band following presently and certainly very popular. Look at the support the Stones use. Aint exactly an 80 year ol Chuck Berry eh......

Check out:

White Stripes (they are a lot deeper and more dverse than what you might see on MTV)

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (Aretha Frankln meets Janis Joplin with a killer backup band)

A zillion New Orleans Soul musicians that are playing somewhere near you (if you're in the States) since they can't live by playing in just New Orleans. They are traveling constantly.

Thom Yorke/Radiohead

REM (can be as poetic as Dylan, even though they have lost a lot of fire in the studio, still a great live act)

Pearl Jam: making honest rock music, consistently.

I love checking out new music, having my kids turn me on to what they are listening to, and turning them onto some artists that might have influenced some of today's music. There is some great stuff out there.

Band/artists in their prime in 2007:

Explosions in the Sky
The Arcade Fire
Wilco
The New Mastersounds
Radiohead
Stars of Track and Field
The New Pornographers

For the longest time I thought music was dead, then I came across these bands and many more. They put my faith back into music. Wilco's album A Ghost Is Born is an amazing piece of artwork, IMHO. I bought it on vinyl and still listen to it fairly frequently.

Had those artist been young today, they might have chosen an another career.

Music is no longer the big thing. Maybe they would be practicing high risk sports.

Amen to that. Spiders(kidsmoke) is a real highlight.

and Arcade Fire are arguably the best live band in the world ,at the mo.

They are spectacular and thrilling a live act, as you could wish to see.
and Wim Butler is a very, very good songwriter.

Thanks for the suggestions. Those I have not heard, I will check out. Never “gotten” Wilco, but will give another shot – I thought their opening slot for the Stones in Atlanta was a snoozer. I do like a lot of these “solid” bands. But again, the difference between “good” and “great” seems clear to me. I would hardly equate the White Stripes to the Stones or Arcade Fire to the Beatles. Would anyone else?? (Others mentioned, like REM and the Black Crowes, I would also argue are no longer “in their prime.”)

No need to be apologetic, Send It To Me! Rock's golden age has long passed. Indeed, what happened?

What happened? Music developed. As in other mediums.

They either died from an overdose, choked on a sandwich or just got old...

I agree with your point though, today's music ain't got the same soul, I like that old time rock n' roll....

Probably because there is so much more to occupy people's attention nowadays. But cultural signifigance is irrelevant. And there are bands out there today that are just as good, if not better, than the ones you mentioned, but if you are waiting for MTV or corporate radio to forcefeed it to you, then you deserve whatever you have to endure.

Prince. I saw him last night for the 1st time and he was amazing. Cross between Hendrix and James Brown.

Panic has been around for over 20 years actually. I was seeing them every monday night in Athens Ga as a college freshman in 1988 and they had been around a while then (they we're heaps better then as well). As far as Lucinda-fantastic musician and performer....
