Personally, I think this photo gives us the best idea of Fergie's 'golden era'...

Don't forget that the artists whose work from the 60s endure today are not necessarily the artists who sold the most in the 60s. Some artists, like Sly, the Beatles and the Stones, achieved commercial success and remain important. Others, like Three Dog Night, the Archies and the Monkees were huge successes while albums that we considered classics today sold in lesser numbers.

The number 1 songs in the U.S. in America in 1969 were by:

Tommy James and the Shondells
Sly and the Family Stone
Tommy Roe
The Fifth Dimension
The Beatles with Billy Preston
Henry Mancini
Zager and Evans
The Rolling Stones
The Archies
The Temptations
Elvis Presley
The Fifth Dimension
The Beatles
Steam
Peter, Paul & Mary
Diana Ross and the Supremes

and the first Number 1 of 1970 was by B.J. Thomas

The other observation I'd like to make is that music today is fragmented in so many ways. It's so much harder for artists to get attention across a broad population. And a lot of what does have an impact is not taken seriously by many (American Idol and High School Musical, for example). And I don't really "get" hip hop, but a lot of people do, and who am I to say that hip hop does not have value?

You have got to be shitting me. Green Day is without a doubt the worst band to have ever existed in the history of recorded music.

That was how I felt a couple of years ago until my son insisted I go to a green day concert with him. I'm sorry, but that show was in my top 10% of best concerts, and I am not a real big fan of theirs.

There are still some amazing acts out there who are giving us GREAT rock and roll shows. While for many, Oasis was a blip in 95-96, I saw them twice then, btu also in 2002 when they were so incredibly good until I was blown away.......

There are many artists now like Green Day who are "growing up" and going through what the Stones and their contemps went thru when they took the music to a more serious level. It's a phase of transition.

Nowadays, though, the emergence of R&B, Rap, and the re-surgence of teeny-bopping, bubblegum-style music has overtaken the Top 40 to the point where I can't even listen to much of it. But I can enjoy new bands thru XM Radio and off the web....but they are not Top 40 Bands.

>Rolling Stones
Beatles
Simon and Garfunkel
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Bob Dylan
Jimi Hendrix
Otis Redding (ok, killed in ’67, but still…)
The Doors
Stevie Wonder
Various Motown greats
Janis Joplin

Band/artists in their prime in 2007

Um…Fergie>

Most of them are still around, doing great...

With all due respect to whoever happens to like the music of today's bands, to me they simply can't hold a candle to the originality of the late 60's/early 70's. So much of the current music scene is a poor rehashing of what came down years ago. I can play a guitar and strum chords and call myself a musician (which is what these current cats are), but the classic rock musicians were artists. There is simply very little substance to today's music and most of it will be forgettable in a few years and will never qualify to be referred to as classic rock. For what it's worth, that is my opinion, but to each his own. As long as you're rocking and enjoying it, go for it!

"There is simply very little substance to today's music and most of it will be forgettable in a few years and will never qualify to be referred to as classic rock"

And as someone posted above, such was the case in 1969.

how about the red hot chili peppers, stadium arcadium is a great album and it seems as though frusciante is really hitting his stride as a musician...
