Well Dan I don't want to be in any way cast nasturtions at your appreciation of The Beastie Boys and while I don't really need to justify my listings - they are after all merely my opinion and therefore not a judgement set in stone; mention of the Beastie Boys brings back memories of VW badge nicking which plagued this green and pleasant land some twenty years ago and our VW was one of the victims.

The craze was generated by said band's rather naff affectation for wearing VW badges medallion like on their scawny chests.

So in the case of the Beastie Boys it's not just their dire image, music and general presence or lack of it (in rock n roll terms), its...

(deepens voice to sepulchral growl)

... personal.

But I would stress this is only my opinion, if everybody else shared my tastes then old Bozo would have to have to radically rethink his career.

i think this list depends a lot on your age ? there are some bands listed here that could seem like the most awful bands ever, but if you had their first 1 or 2 albums, you might have a little mercy on them ...
a couple that come to mind - queen and the eagles - their first couple albums were really good IMO - then they decided to "sell out" at some point, like a lot of bands in the day... then there are a lot of newer bands that i know must suck, although i've never really paid attention to the specifics so i can't say for sure :-)

at any rate, my list of bands with no redeeming qualities whatsoever would be:
Styx
Journey
Loverboy

....will have to add more later after i think some more, i must have blocked them out of my consciousness ;-)

ah, he isn't a band, but i just can't stand billy joel :-)
Electric Light Orchestra was pretty awful...

Awwwwww, thanks Elmo! I don't know what the hell today's youth sees in this Shite...I'm making sure my kids are brainwashed from the womb on!! And they all have their favorite songs already! My 5 year old daughter loves the "fire" song, which is SFTD (the recent remix single featured the tongue in flames on the cover and that's how she's always thought of it LOL), Blue Turns To Grey, and Wild Horses. My 3 year old son loves Brown Sugar (you might recall from a while back that he used to go in the cupboard and get the box of brown sugar to dance with), and both of them love Baby Break It Down. And my little 2 year old....he takes the cake - he's a diehard rocker thru & thru, which is his favorite Stones song. He LOVES Keef - doesn't matter the song, he goes crazy just hearing that voice and loves when I do imitations of him..."It's good to be here; Head, heart, and balls; etc" I sing Thru & Thru and he goes NUTS!! Now all 3 of them love Ruby Tuesday, which I sang to each of them when they were infants to put them to sleep. Where would we be without our Stones?!

Too many to mention, but remember; Frankie Goes To Holywood was supposed to be the future of pop.

Having already nominated my top 5 with U2 at the apex can I also nominate the following as part of my outer hall of infamy?

Hell I will anyway.

Sweet
Boney M
Bay City Rollers
Gary Glitter and the Glitter Band
Linkin Park
Papa Roach
Picketywitch
The Smurfs
Radiohead
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Men at Work
The Ordinary Boys
The Towers of London
The Partridge Family
Roy Wood's Wizzard
The Electric Light Orchestra
Black Sabbath
The Wurzels
The Wombles
The England Football Squad
The Eagles
Nine Inch Nails
Elvis Costello and the Attractions
The Boomtown Rats
Alvin Stardust

I know there's more out there but these are particularly grim.

Can't believe the hate for the most excellent David Cassidy/Shirley Jones collaboration - The Partridge Family. The little girl has to rate as the 3rd greatest tamborine player ever behind early Mick and Davy Jones.

Really, though, "I Think I Love You", "Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted", "I'll Meet You Halfway", "24 Hours A Day", etc are all fine examples of bubblegum pop (I'm a closet bubblegum fan). Without these songs (and several Osmond hits), I'd have never got any hand holding action in the 6th grade in 1971.
