An Andy Warhol portrait of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger has sold for $46,800 at a Sydney auction.

The screenprint portrait entitled Andy Warhol's Mick Jagger 1975 is signed by both Warhol and Jagger.

While Wednesday night's sale price for the pop art piece exceeded the estimate of between $25,000 and $35,000, it was less than the price achieved for the same work in London and New York.

The portrait is one of a number of works Warhol produced for the music industry, including Rolling Stones album covers Sticky Fingers (1971) and Love You Live (1977).

Warhol was commissioned to do several portraits of Jagger in 1975.

Meanwhile, a Fred Williams piece Landscape with Water Ponds (1965-67) sold for $1.860 million and Brett Whiteley's Orange Fiji Dove sold for $1.92 million at auction.

A spokeswoman for Deutscher~Menzies Auctioneers Marie Geissler said: "It's been quite a big night here and we're very pleased with the results".

a signed numbered print signed by artist and subject, actually medium-high for a warhol print. the originals go to the millions. check Liz Taylor warhol. The Liz original went for over 12 million dollars. The jagger prints are quite ugly and not the best of Warhol but obviously due to the subject matter quite attractive for investors.

I have to tell a friend, who's got 8 (eight) Jagger-portraits from the Warhol-series on the living room walls... (It was a birthday present from some wealthy friends, I believe!)

I hope Ronnie's prints sell for such a price one day, but I doubt it.

I have to doubt it too. Ronnie is a good artist but not of the stature of Andy Warhol

I could have bought one in 1985 but I had little money then! It was from a Gallery in the Village and the cost was....$2500! I could kill myself for NOT taking out a loan to buy it. He had about 3 of the collection available. I took pictures of all of them, glad I did. I have an art dealer friend who is trying to sell an ORIGINAL, not a silk screened print but one of the original 11( I thought it was 8) from which the 2500 printed versions of each of the 8 were made. The owner of this is asking $1.25 million and my dealer friend will get a cut if he sells it. If I were to find a buyer, I'd get $25,000.
