back in the day when black artists had their own charts ( known as race charts) white artists would often copy their hits, one of the most famous of these is Bill Haley and his version of "Shake Rattle and Roll" but as was common at the time an naughty lyrics was changed. the line "get out of that bed and was her face and hands" was deemed to suggestive for a white man ( black people it was reckoned didnt have a soul to save !!) and was changed to "get into that kitchen and was those pots and pans. YES unbelievable by todays standards. some other lines were also changed but some also missed including one of my favourite lines of all time
" i'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store"
I have a great CD of early blues songs with lyrics that are not just suggestive but in some case downright obvious, and from some unexpected scources at times Jackie Wilson LaVerne Baker Duet " (think twice vesion X)
jackie " You allways lift yer dress, time i look...
laverne" "tahts allright, lick it, you know how to lick it dontca....?"
