Voodoo - Carla can only put out a few thousand CD's at a time, she told me the
recording of: Too Hot For Snakes - bankrupted her & her husband for a while.

They had to put up most of the $$, recording equipment, studio time, paying the
musicians, Taylor, Ian Mac, etc. for the mini tour of the west coast.

Guess it cost's alot to do something like that! Taylor's in the same boat..

MLC

A few years ago, rumors circulated about Carla releasing a two disc set of her collaboration with Taylor, including YGTM from the first Roxy show (which appeared on the Japanese release of 2H4S) and an alternative take of Winter. Your explanation of her finances for these albums explains why the set has not be released.

Also, there is a nice article about Taylor in the current issue of Vintage Guitar.

He refused to sign my copy of Stranger in this town commenting he had a disagreement with the record company.

No, you're getting two things mixed up. There's no reason for him to refuse signing "Stranger In This Town".

It's the CD "Shadowman" that he objects to.

No, really, he didn't want to sign Stranger and he mentioned the record company aas the reason. I know that story about the Sasha record, too. The first one is my favourite of his works, though Lost in the Desert from Stones' Throw my favourite song.

MCDDTLC,
I take it then that music is not Carla's primary source of income? Or is it? Since you have met her - I assume from the way your post read - I wonder what you can fill in for me about where she comes from? I cannot find her on Wikipedia, and I'm not locating anything on her website.

Hey for all you Mick Taylor fans missing Too Hot For Snakes....I've just found out that this is going to be re-released by Collectors Choice Music in April!! It will be a 2CD set featuring that performance and a dozen studio tracks featuring Mick from various Carla Olson albums. Great news!!!

Oh well, in that case: you'll have to try next time then. He could have been angry with the label for a number of years but that must have dissipated with time as I've seen him autograph copies of Stranger In This Town without a problem.
Lost in the Desert is a great song.

I can't wait to pick up the Mayall albums to hear how he sounds on there. Those are all coming out in Japan soon in mini-LP versions, so I'll wait for those.

Short Bio for CO:

Along with Kathy Valentine (a future member of the Go-Go's), Carla Olson formed the Textones in the early '80s for a few singles on IRS. (Most of these tracks appear on Through the Canyon [Rhino] and Back in Time [Demon U.K.].) The band's major-label debut, Midnight Mission (A&M), included help from Don Henley, Ry Cooder, Barry Goldberg, and Gene Clark. Cedar Creek, the band's second album, appeared in 1987 on Enigma Records. Olson then worked on many projects, including ones by John Fogerty, Henley, and Eric Johnson and a duet album with Clark. In 1988, she recorded a self-titled solo album (for Amigo Musik) in Sweden, backed by Wilmer X. After another duet project, this time with former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, Olson's second solo LP (Within an Ace) was released in 1993 on Watermelon Records; Reap the Whirlwind followed the next year. That album signaled a period of relative quiet from the guitarist, as she disappeared into private life while her best-of collection hit the shelves. It wasn't until 2001 that she returned, boasting The Ring of Truth, an album featuring Taylor and a handful of roots rock tunes that showcased her weathered vocals and comfortable sound. Olson has also found success on the other side of the studio glass, producing records for Barry Goldberg, Dona Oxford, Jake Andrews, Joe Louis Walker, Davis Gaines, Mare Winningham, and Phil Upchurch.

You should start by getting Midnight Mission (1984) which is great. It was re-released by Evangeline Records (distribution on Universal) in 2001 so I would think it should be readily available. I like the title track especially, which is about the homeless shelter in L.A.. [www.midnightmission.org]

A very informative write-up, largely based on an article published by the L.A. Times (7 Oct 2002), about Carla Olson - and her work with Taylor :

I think Carla's husband Saul Davis, co-writer of The Ring of Truth etc., is known as stones researcher. That's interesting.

Hello Norbert,
It's been a while since you posted this impressive list of Taylor tracks.
I am a great fan myself BUT I was surprised to see a track called 'Stoned By You'
by Herbie Mann from an LP called "Reggae 2".I had no idea that this LP was officially released. Some great Stones historians have mentioned it.Nico Zentgraf shows it on his webpages but Felix Aeppli says that the LP was not released.
Can you throw any light on it because, regardless,I would love to have that track if we can do a trade.
Greetings from Brisbane,Australia

there's a John Mayall show MT did just before joining the Stones which is apparently excellent...Live in Belgium May or June 1969 ??

Joe Henry - Murders Crow released in late 1980 . MT plays on 6 tracks and his guitar playing glistens with melodic wonderment. Your favorite band leader these days with the stones Chuck Leavell also plays on the record.

play that guitar boy.

The solo in sway, with Carla Olson, is one of the best solos I've heard in my life

I asked this before, but received no answer. I got a Japanese edition of Stranger in this town with MT's - allegedly authentic - autograph on the cover. After last year's Milano show I asked him if it was true, he didn't have a clue, but signed the cd again so, who cares.

Does anybody know if the original signature is true?

By the way, I see from Norbert's impressive post above that MT collaborated with Ligabue ... After Db Boulevard & Bill Wyman at San Remo, I didn't think it could be worse. Then we got the Stones with Justin Timberlake ... and now Ligabue ...

What next, old Ronnie dumps Ekatarina to date Giusy Ferreri?

Sad day!

Did MT ever do anything with 'Separately'? Or was it just 'Leather Jacket' he expanded on?

Re: Mick Taylor - What CD to recommend?

Yes, "Separately" is on A STONE'S THROW (although the track listing for that CD changes somewhat dramatically based on regions so tread carefully). Nico's site has a great Taylor database and can be indispensable in finding what was released when and where.

And here's the latest news regarding Mick's session work taken from Nico's site:

03/01/09:

It was never easy to keep track with Mick Taylor's session work. Thanks to the research of a fellow collector I just learned that he did a version of Love In Vain with an Ukrainian girl duo in 1997. It's available now on a download-only album on an Ukrainian website. Available here.

Download album by Sestry Telnyuk "The Telnyuk Sisters 1994-1998 Archive" (medalmusic.com).

Best wishes
Norbert
