For me Midnight Rambler is still the best song for seeing the Stones' hitting a groove and jamming it for anything up to 14 minutes. My personal fave is the one on the Mick's Birthday boot - Madison Sq Gardens July 26 1972.
I'd be interested to hear of equally heroic versions - especially ones longer than the standard 11 minutes.
I'm not sure about which version is the best, but the greatest rendition I've heard live was in Gothenburg 2007. Mick Jagger did an excellent job on the harmonica and the crowd went totally crazy.
The version played at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney in 2003 as the very first song was absolutely killer. This is the only gig that they've ever opened with MR. They should do it again - a brilliant opening number.
The best ones are objectively speaking ;-) somewhere between 1969 and 1976. It hasnt been played live since.
the version on @#$%& Bluews is the best live version. The Studio version is great and underrated. The 1976 versions from Paris are great. 1973 has many and MSG 1972 is a classic.

"It hasnt been played live since." ??? I just imagined they did in front of me?
you should listen again to Paris 2006. The problem is that the boot is not excellent. Very bluesy version, relaxed. If you prefer more electric version than Brussels 73 or others should be better
The longest version was probably Los Angeles 1975 (circulates on many boots), clocking in at over 14 minutes!
But the best versions I know are New York 1969 (no overdubs on that one!), Leeds 1971, and of course, Brussels 1973. I also like the very bluesy version from Hyde Park, London, 1969.
yep - Ya Ya's (or New York '69) version is the best. First time Jagger would hit the stage with his belt - audiences were mesmerised....after that the crowd were expecting it...
I don't think there is a real answer to this question. Being probably my favorite Stones tune I say its easier to classify this song into categories..
Studio, 1969-1970 versions, 1972-1973 version (coke induced, frantic tempo), 1975-1976 versions (sloppy, theatrical and brilliant), 1989-1994 (bringing it back with a new style and great blues jam) and than today's version, which can be different from night to night and the song sort of goes where the band goes on that particular night. The MSG and Saitiama versions are both great but still both very different.
