Maybe I'm just getting old, but alcohol doesn't make me sleep. It may knock me out at first, but after a couple of hours I'm all wired up again.

Bulk head seats can give you room...but: Bulk heads mean babies. If you have a crying one next to you, kiss the sleeping ideas goodbye.

If you're afraid of flying, listen to the rational people that have posted already comparing planes to autos. And remember, statistically, the most dangerous part of your journey will be the drive to the airport. No kidding! Once you're done that you can relax and drift off to dreamland (until you have to get in a dreaded car again).

Have you ever tried BOSE Quiet Comfort? It becomes popular for road warriors in our country.
This acoustic noise cancelling headphones are good not only for listening music but for sleep.

The best thing you can do is fall asleep if the plane crashes. It won't...just close your eyes and go.

Don't get on the plane is the solution. Get on a luxury liner and take your time sipping cocktails etc etc

I regularly travel from Singapore to New York, which is an 18 hour non stop flight (the world's longest non stop)
Really, Get a face mask, ear plugs, take a xannex, or five mg. of valuum, then eat a bit and then take a Ambien...works wonders for me.

in 2003 for Licks, we popped about 5 prescription Klonopins at the airport and we're out cold before the plane took off, and awoke fresh about 20 minutes before landing in Philly.

:confused smileyorry, CIVIL AVIATION BUFF ALERT. Those without an inordinate interest in this crap, please feel free to skip::

whitem8, im' jealous that you take that flight. a quick question: i've forgotten. is it operated by the 777 or 747? And, do you know if this route is scheduled to be taken over by the (god-awful) A380 when it (finally) enters service?

Hey Nikki bong,
It is a Airbus A-340 500 (345) Check out www.seatguru.com,
[www.seatguru.com].
There are only two classes, executive economy and raffles class. They aren't replacing it with the new euro airbus, but they are going to scrap the executive economy class and make it all raffles class...which is nice, but expensive. Kind of sucks! I usually fly home for the summer Singapore-New York, 18 hrs non stop, then I return to Singapore from LA-Singapore, which is 16hurs non-stop. A great way to fly! Before I would have to fly Northworst from Singapore-Japan-Detroit, which was 23 hours in a shitty Northworst plane.

As someone mentioned earlier that most flights in the past five years are packed. So getting three seats across open is a rear feat these days but I have had luck with the three empty seats recently when I request my seat in the last couple of rows. Besides that you are close to the head.

You can also put your head down on the tray table like you did in school on your desk and wake up with a glob of spit leaking out the side of your mouth.

Good Luck

Whoa, Bongster.... why so hostel towards the A380 my fine young man? Not that I'm one of their cheerleaders but am curious to see if this Jumbo x Jumbo concept "flies" - lol - so to speak.... I'm in nuetral till I hear about the reviews once it's in service and then take a ride meself.... BTW, did you know that one of the main reasons we're having so many delays at all the airports is there's alot more planes flying in and out. The airlines have scaled down from say a 767 to a 757 and then you have more and more business people, celebs, and politicians flying little private jets and they're gunking up the system. Saw a LONG interview with a senior Airport controller AND a senior pilot the other night on the news.... all these private jets are beginning to be a big problem - too many of em EVERYWHERE (and now Cesna is building a 4 set mini - jet to even clog up the airports more). I see nothing wrong with stuffing an A380 with 800 passengers on an LAX - Heathrow flight if it's gonna ease up all the congession. We're heading for BIG PROBLEMS and something has to be done before the whole system falls apart.... With that said I think the Boeing 787 dreamliner is gonna ROCK !!! That one I am A cheerleader for.....

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I don't have a fear of flying at all. I should've asked this question a few months ago so I could experiment with a variety of new drugs! Could've really stockpiled with little trouble of getting the sympathy of the prescribing doctor!

And there I was thinking all of the sound asleep people on the plane were just lucky --- looks like there's a lot of people who really plan this out. I used to try to get my kids to take some Benadryl before flying, but it always backfired -- it would make them hyper instead. I'm a big fan of Benadryl, but it tends to make me feel totally dried out and like I've got a major hangover the next day.

The Lunesta & beer thing has worked the past two nights, but again, it's been with the luxury of a real bed.

the A380 is absolutely hideous. everything else you said, i agree with. damn these regional jets clogging up the airspace!

I totally agree about the A380....my god traveling with so many passengers, luggage, etc...
I much prefer the smaller more comfortable planes with good service.

Bongster and Whitem8, Yeah, I agree with you, you might not have noticed that I didn't mention ME being part of that 800 being stuffed on board. I'm like a good US politician - I'll take the A1 Health Care Plan for free, you take nada - you know, let the other guy suffer - lol.. With that said, I'll take the A380 NON -STOP to Bangkok/Singapore from LA (as opposed to LA/Tokyo or HKG/BGK or SING) or a NON - STOP LA - PARIS (as opposed to LA/JFK or DC/CDG) I'd rather deal with "the monster" once than be switching/missing flights dealing with what has become our 3rd world airport system.... I haven't seen the interior yet on an A380 but I assume it looks a lot like the full double decker non specified Jet used in the film "FLIGHT PLAN" with Jodie Foster. Not to be the odd-man out but it didn't look too bad to me. I've had a seat upstairs on a few very long 747-400 flights and it's kind of a nice feeling up there - pretty calm, pretty quiet....basically just COZY. And in the end, we all just want COZY, right? With ALL THAT said - GIMME biz class on a Boeing Dreamliner 787 - I'll take AIR FRANCE.....

LAX - NRT upper deck 747-400 (and next to a stunning japanese girl): the best flight i've ever taken.

The A380 looks a little . . . . . like Mick T lying back on a couch.
