Something Peculiar With The Setlist?

Hey

A little too late for this, but...

I have heard at lest twice last time complaints from
non-hardcore or non-notorious fans...
that the beginning of the ABB Tour Set doesnt rock confused smiley

As I recall now the last complaint came from some nobody-
journalist and dealt with Göteborg. before I've heard my
pal (Who is to be seen in Kent's thread), who bought a casual
tic outside the Exhibition Centre in Brno. Been pondering
& contemplatin' this fact ever since.

Let's look at these 'first sets':

Start Me Up
Let's Spend The Night Together
Oh No Not You Again
All Down The Line
Love Is Strong
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Midnight Rambler
I'll Go Crazy
Tumbling Dice

in Brno... - Göteborg, then?

Start Me Up
Let's Spend The Night Together
Rough Justice
Ain't Too Proud To Beg
Let It Bleed
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Midnight Rambler
I'll Go Crazy
Tumbling Dice

Where is the problem??? Well; I can only identify two-three possible ones:
The first is spelled SMU & the other YCAGWYW. The latter is
way way too unknown for non-fans; and maybe Start ME Up aint that
monsterhit we want to believe. Has it survived 26 years of Rock 'n Roll?
Tumbling was too long in Brno; as I got it Keef didnt end it when he should.
Dice is a song which I sense is pretty depending of the mood of the evening.
Finally I have never liked that Crazy-tune. Just coz its a great song it
doesnt have to fit the Stones; like Get Up Stand Up, which rarely
seem to smoke the way one could expect.

.....................Any other thoughts here?

My point(-s) is, they could maybe consider a new opening tune, if(?) more tours.
Dice is maybe a little odd placed; and YCAGWYW could easily be dropped.
I'd throw in Shelter there, permanently... With Shelter AND Rambler in the
same sets, I know at least one dude who would purchase much much more tix.

An interesting point, and I've heard much of the same thing. I think Start Me Up is a good starter to kick it all of, so I don't think SMU is the problem. But they might seem to extend the songs that non-hardcode Stones fans don't know that well, a bit too much. I think many would rather have two songs, than a looong version of You Can't Always Get What You Want f.ex.

You have a good point regarding Gimme Shelter and Rambler. Those would both be great in the beginning of the set, and IMO I'd rather have GS than YCAGWYW.. smiling smiley But now, that's just me..

re: the beginning of the ABB setlist doesn't rock..........baloney!

IMO the journalists (or whomever you heard say this) doesn't know what
he's talking about. He/she probably wants Brown Sugar/JJF/SAtisfaction
played over and over and over. Probably wonders why a marathon runner
does not sprint for the entire 26 mile race too!

Those setlists you cited look pretty good to me. Very balanced.
Like a marathoner, they are setting a pace......quick off the start
and then a steady pace until the homestretch.

re: YCAGWYW.... is way way too unknown for non-fans.

As for it being "unknown" I disagree completely. It's become
a sing-along song. It's just that it can go on too long
and IMHO is sometimes boring....but I understand it gives Mick
an opportunity to catch his breath...and overall it's a nice song.

IORR............but I like it!

Yeah, snc, its not my opinions of course.
I also like these setlists a lot!!
Seems like the rookies and 'public' have problems with
the less known songs too, you gotta view the "problem"
as a Whole.

But I lost my main point, the crucial thing:
Wouldnt it be better to spread out the wild cards
and not put all unexptexted or changing stuff in the beginning?
Thus the second half also would dwell one or two fresh numbers.

YCAGWYW is a nice, LONG breather for Mick and it gives the faireather fans something to sing along with. Personally it wouldn't phase me to never hear it again live.

Likewise Midnight Rambler. I'm hoping to hear CYHMK in that spot when we see them at Slane.

Bring back Not Fade Away as the opener ! It was the most inspired choice in the last 20 years !

I don't mind what the Stones play. As long as they play.

Well... the venues are selling out or close to, right? The band must be doing something right, yes?

Rambler and Shelter were played a few times on same shows in the Asian leg.

I think those sets look like a pretty interesting mix of songs. Not as many rockers in a row as earlier on the tour, but It looks pretty good to me. Unless you want to get into why isnt there more new material...thats a whole other discussion.

The instant or casual fans & the masses want less unusual songs.
We fans want more unusual.

Still all would gain if they moved one of the replaceable slots
to the later half. And I still wanna question YCAGWYW.

YCAGWYW followed by Rambler reminds me of Brussels!

I can not think that either SMU or YCAGWYW are the problems - they are as as 'known' as any reasonable Stones tune can be (if they are not, then they should just play 19 times 'Satisfaction'...) At least at El Ejido, where I last time saw them, "Start Me Up" was a fantastic opener, people went crazy. Also everytime I have heard YCAGWYW, it has been a crowd pleaser.

The problem for big masses are the obscure songs from Exile or ABB plus the soul numbers, etc. I heard that people in Helsinki were wondering what a hell is that when they played "Sweet Virginia".

Last weeks I have met people in their 40s-50s who dont know who
BIll Wyman is. I'd guess at least half of the crowd have no idea about any
YCAGWYW. If they knew it, they wouldnt find it boring.

I cant imagine All Down The Line would be a problem for people;
I mean - listen to it from Brno... So diabolically totally smokin'!!!!!

The problem is the bloody audience! Well, that's why I decided to go to see The Stones in Spain where the wild crowds are famous, and where are no any bloody seats on the field. Last year I went to see them at Twickenham because I thought parhaps their home crowd might have something going on (even though it was all seated - I wasn't disappointed).

Anyway, the mild, ignorant, tasteless, lazy (but well-off) audiences are the cost of being a part of cultural history, an icon everyone wants to see. I felt sick in seeing and reading all those local stupid celebreties being interviewed while attending the Stones show here in Finland. I think more north you go in Europe, more difficult the situation is. But I bet The Stones are not complaining in their way to bank.

There's no such thing as an "obscure song" from Exile. It's recognized universailly as one of the finest rock records ever.

ABB, however, you may have a point on. And it may it remain forever in obscurity . . .

pity the stones couldnt mix the setlists round a bit.

they can play loads of songs, so why do they have to have almost the same stuff every gig.

surely

its only rock and roll
you got me rocking
start me up
honky tonk woman
you cant always get what you want
tumblin dice
i go crazy
wanna hold you

can all be dropped and replaced with shorter and older songs.
