ya this is true. i loved my one show this year in rome (still thinking about it :-) but the crowd was in such a state of happy drunken or whatever insanity that i can't say i really remember many specifics about the songs. it was mostly a (beautiful) blur of an experience - but i guess since i've seen the stones more than once, that seemed alright for that time :-)

When Rolling Stones appear on stage people on sitting places stand up and they were standing during entire concert. ;-)

Thanks for your review and your thoughts Tamba - very eloquently put. It seems that 'St Petersburg 2007' will go down as one of the great Stones gigs, wish I'd been there!

It sounds that it was the best show of the summer. I thought of going to Saint Petersburg, but unfortunately, I could not make it. Actually, I would have loved to be there.

Yeah, I agree that they might be inspired with the surroundings, because the Palace Square has this amazing effect: being an enormously vast space with a huge column in the centre it doesn't diminish you. Even when I was a child, I've always felt very comfortable there.

And the city itself has smartened up for the Stones with all those random rainbows and pink little clouds. smiling smiley

ITA! As for me, I was so smashed by Sympathy for the Devil that kept standing only because there was no place to fall down smiling smiley If there were an idiot who chose to look at me instead of the stage at that moment he would surely think "What this slobbering vegetable case is doing here?" smiling smiley

Nice photos, BRQ, and wonderful to have more of a sense of the setting in the square where cultures collided!

Yes, I like these atmospheric shots too, I'm sure the band were uplifted by performing in such magnificent surroundings instead of a largely black void they normally play to during night time shows.

All those Denis Avetisyan pictures are wonderful - he's a great photographer. I love that last one where Ronnie is having a blast and everyone else is cracking up just looking at him...

adeaters; some years later I took the program to china, in *97, and it had to pass the censors of course; the parisian original version lasts for 7 hours, but the chinese edition was cut down to 4 hours; I had to view the program with my chinese mate in order to explain the films so that he would be able to describe and to translate simultaneously what was goin on on the screen ; and up comes a 3o seconds spot announcing the Rolling Stones Tour of South Africa, with a bloke who by changing his glasses into dark shades and putting on a bandana and pretending to smoke a reefer becomes Keef, thus announcing a tour of RSA and sponsored by southafrican radio - now how would any of you imagine to explain to this mate of mine what is known as the cultural revolution and oppressed the likes of counter revolutionaries, anarchists singing about Street fighting men and SFD; to the the son of a political commissioner watching over the bridge in Nanking where the Japanese slaughtered thousands in the Mid Thirties of last century; well I failed - impossible to get this across; but it never left my mind - that's why I'm with you, Tamba-

Tamba and bv, I absolutely love your reviews! This was the one show I would've loved to have been at besides London but, sadly, it just wasn't possible. The image of seeing the Stones perform in this beautiful square with so much history attached to it alone would have been breathtaking if not somewhat humbling. There's always a special joy attached for me in watching the Stones perform for a more or less virgin crowd like this one and see them step up to the plate and give it their all. I'm willing to bet they were a bit humbled themselves to be able to perform in this venerable place!

Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind...

BarRoomQueen and vadim, thanks for the photoes, Corvin thanks for the update.

There's a dictaphone record of the show on the net, but the quality is _very_ poor. If anyone's interested, I'll upload it to sendspace (here's a working link [ifolder.ru] but I doubt it works for non-Russian IPs)

I've read a preciousss review of a girl who sat in the 7th row of C1. It goes like: "It was a super show, everything was great, but I was rather hurt when a part of the scene went off to the center of the square and they sang Satisfaction there. It was the only song I knew, and I had to sit there and listen to the songs I never heard before and wouldn't care to, waiting for Satisfaction, and then missed it! But altogether the show was fine and I'm glad I was there, because they are legends."
I suppose the C1 and D1 were full of such girls and boys of rich daddys. No wonder they were sitting with sour faces.

Full audio of Petersburg concert (good quality, mp3):

[flyfolder.ru]
[flyfolder.ru]

And about "stone faces" and "robots" and all this shit smiling smiley) You just got the wrong tickets, guys. Watch this - that's what I call real rock-n-roll !! (quality is bad, but you can feel the fan-zone):

Next video has better quality and it shows arriving of B-scene again, BUT !!! here you can see the best moment of the show personally for me. That's the story: When B-scene arrived, and Keith comed just to the place where I stood, I shouted out: "Keeeeeeith !!!" - and he looked at me, I showed him my thumb up - and he smiled and waved his hand to me in response (looking at me at that moment)! And that is all captured on this video. Look this video from 3 min 30 sec to 3 min 40 sec!!! That was great!!!

It was real rock-n-roll show!
