Ignorant American?

Maybe I'm just an ignorant American, but I noticed that the 18 song setlists were all in Eastern European countries. Maybe they feel they have a bigger following in Western Europe and they are saving #19 (th nervous breakdown) for Western European crowds. We could debate this, but we will know the answer in a couple weeks.

They perform Can't Always get and Rambler which take more time than other songs, so the shows do still last 1 h 55 min or so, i.e. almost two hours. If you paid attention to the newds and show reports you would have noticed there is a heatwave in South East Europe right now, with temperatures of 35-45 C (95-105 F) during late afternoon and even until midnight, so both the band and the crowd can't take much more that 18 songs and 1h 55 minutes of performing. Also, Mick's voice is now tested. We don't want any cancelled shows this summer.

As far as I remember they did Rambler and Can't always get also together in a 21 song set(http://www.iorr.org/tour05/moncton.htm).So that is not really something that speaks against one or two more songs in show + I think crowd is able to take more than 18. But I agree that Micks voice is a risk factor. But where to take a cut 15 songs?

I think we'll be back to a 20 or even 20+ song show from Dublin on.

They always play for about two hours. How many songs are played is not important.

You forgot two words at the end "for me".

It is important for some people. I don't want them to be some kind of Grateful Dead, i.e. being satisfied with a 2 hour version of Midnight Rambler. But on the other hand this could be great for the setlist moaners. Every show a totally new setlist. hahahaha

Well they played 19 songs in Belgrade. They probably cut it down to 18 due to this horrible heatwave. Those of you who don't live in the Southeastern Europe should consider themselves lucky. The wather is beyond horrible these days.

I don't think any of the people who sit on their computers and nag about number of songs in a show do know what 40 C i.e. 105 F temperature is for the performing artist or even for the crowd. If you went to the show you would understand.

At least for the crowd I and maybe some others know what it means. So it isn't an exclusive experience for the people who were there as you state it.

Well the body temperature is 37 C and I don't know in F but 40 C is a lot more than body temperature which means you will die unless you get lots of water or other forms of fluid, cooling or whatever. I feel like I am talking to drunk people or schoolkids who don't listen so I will quit this discussion know. This is obvious to anyone who knows about dehydration.

I don't think this fits to your own board rules, does it?

I just wanted to say that some of us had made the same exerience in the past. So it's not actually a new situation. That's all.

I agree with you completely, I was in Budapest and the heat was unbearable. It had to affect their playing. Couple of young fans near me collapsed so imagine how hard it was for older fans and for the band!

Is this some kind of a record, have they ever played while it was more than +42C?

Milan 2006 -> 45 C when the gates was opened (16:30h)
El Ejido 2007 -> 44 C when the first supported band was on stage (20:30h)

Oh yeah, same old story!
Do you know that famous Eastern European towns like Halifax or Chicago?
Last fall they played a 18 song set there.

Other Eastern EU countries like Romania, Montenegro and Hungary got a 18 song sets, further Eastern EU counties like Serbia and Czech Rep. got 19 songs.

So what is your point here? You presume that Stones may have bigger following in West. well, just to let you know this time The Stones attracted more people in Bucharest or Beograd or Budapest than in most of the other countries they played.

I understand America's image in the world is tenuous right now, but I didn't think it was so bad as to merit a lecture on heat waves from Norwegians. 40-45 degrees celsius does not qualify as heat wave in much of the US - it's just called the summer weather...smiling smiley

When I saw them perform last fall in Chicago the temp was 42°F and the 30MPH winds off the lake made it feel like 22°. Mick remarked "I can't feel me feet." They cut the show to 18 songs and believe me, no one cared that they didn't have to sing-along to YCAGWYW.

I was just trying to make conversation and I think I succeded. (Isn't it what this is all about?) And Halifax and Chicago ARE no different than eastern European Towns.

There is a little difference. General admission, queuing for hours, and the fact that you can hardly live your spot to get a drink.
