Stand In Guitarrists in Stones albums?
Date: July 15, 2007 18:43

I was reading an old thread about Led Zeppelin and plagiarism and I came across this post by a poster called Bingo:

...all music is borrowed and tinkered with....at least Jimmy plays his guitar parts....how many stand in guitarists have the Stones used on their albums?

Enlgish is not my first language so I have to ask...What does "stand in guitarrists" mean? Does this mean some ghost guitar player played Keith's or Mick Taylor's guitar parts in some albums or something?

Please explain.

yeah, "stand-in" normally means "substitute".
and yes, other guitarists have appeared on Stones albums, and been credited for their work.
it's not like they "pretend" Keith or Mick T was really playing it.

So then, they aren't really "stand-in guitarrists" but rather guest guitarrists, right?

I know some guitar players like Ry Cooder, Wayne Perkins or Harvey Mandel have played on certain songs from some Stones albums but they are credited on the albums so they wouldn't really qualify as "stand-in guitarrists".

Thanks for clarifying, "with sssoul".

I think the term "stand-in guitarists" could be used, when Keith, Taylor or Ronnie simply couldn't make it to the studio; or didn't know there even was a session - just like there was a "stand-in drummer" for Charlie on the It's Only Rock'n Roll track

I'm confused now, so did they ever use stand-in guitarrists or not?

Didn't Ronnie "sit in" for Charlie on Dirty Work?

Not in the sense that Erik is referring to, although I suppose you could say that Dave Mason and Ry Cooder did some 'standing in' for Brian in '68-69.

Jimmy Page on Dirty Work... Waddy on Bridges... some dude I can't think of on "Too Much Blood"

all those guitar players are all listed on the albums except for beggars banquet.

the more realistic example of 'stand-in' guitarist or drummer would be on the KISS albums of the late 70's when ace frehley and peter criss wasn't on the tracks. the albums all said the band was on the tracks but in the past 10 years and many books including by gene simmons all have said that other musicians finished the albums without those 2 playing on them. that, is the true definition of 'stand-in'.

I suppose we should include Wayne Perkins and Harvey Mandel from the Black and Blue "auditions"...before they hired Ronnie to shut him up ;^)

Their guitar technician, Jim Barber.
