'66 review for Beelyboy
Posted by: chippydodo ()

I saw the Stones on July 3rd 1966 at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens, NY. I was 14 at the time. The thing I remember the most is I could really hear them. I had seen the Beatles twice and never heard one note over the screams, nothing- really. I thought I was going to see Mick Jagger not hear him. It was a horseshoe stadium and they had no seats on the infield to protect the grass courts, but the lined big speakers up around center court. "Aftermath" had just come out and I loved "Stupid Girl". "Lady Jane was great too, also they came in on a helicopter right to the back of the stage. Brian Jones was great and I'm really proud to be able to say I saw him live. When I hit the bars before shows, most recently Atlantic City, fans almost can't believe I go back that far. I was also at the "Breakfast Show" on YA YA's but that's for another time. Chip Dayton

Cool, chippy. I'm envious, but was only 5 years old.

Wow, I didn't know that.

Undoubtedly a decision made after the riotous opening night show near Boston in late June (Manning Bowl, Lynn), where the Stones had a very difficult time escaping in their limos due to "fans" using lumber from wooden barricades to beat on their car.

Alright ChippyD. I was at Altamont, but I have to say, the fact that you saw Brian Jones live (and they played 'Stupid Girl'!) really trumps that.

When I listen to Honolulu '66 I realize how strong the Stones were musically on stage during the Brian era.

All you folks who saw them pre-1969 really witnessed something special IMO. We envy you greatly!

Nice, chippydodo,

I also saw them on that tour. I am glad to have seen all 3 "incarnations" of the Stones: with Brian, with MT, and with Ron. But that also means that I am old!!!!

ty, great to read...can immediately hear 'stupid girl' amidst the screams of approval and excitement...
very nice to read and hear about and ty for posting.

(i adore the bridge in that one...must have been a panic live...'i'm sick and tired and i really have my doubts....' till the bust out, 'like a lady in waiting to a virgin queen...' what a kick...)

this might be hard to discern amidst all the excitement,
and obviously mick as lead singer gonna get the lion's share (certainly a leo, heh) of attention...

...HHHowwwever... i bet brian was generating a lot of the screams and attention?? and communication with the crowd? or not...
the natural focus would have gone to brian after mick, did you feel? like was brian a co-frontman in a performance sense at the show? moving up to the crowd and 'playin' 'em a little?? Gosh would love to know... yeh cool review, ty again...i would have loved to have seen them with brian once, sigh...

By early 1966, Keith actually had become the official co-frontman. If you look at the Ed Sullivan performance in March 1966, Keith was way up front doing back-up vocals while Brian was way in back. And unlike the early clips you see of the Stones live performances from 1963 to 1965, Brian wasn't smiling nearly as much anymore.

1966 is when Brian had the whole image thing nailed so I'm sure he stood out whether he was the official No.2(whatever that means) or not.

Stupid Girl live, man what a knock out!!! Can I borrow your memories!? smiling smiley

I wouldn't go by the Ed Sullivan performances. Those were live vocals over taped playback, so only the guys singing had anything to do.

Up to and including their February 1966 appearance, excluding ATGB, they were 100% live. smiling smiley

it's so confusing that it's the later US shows that were playback,
but the earlier UK shows. (when was the first non-mimed RSG?)

ahem - i digress, sorry :E

Hmm, the stones played 3 songs live on RSG in 1965.

yeah. and i know they did do mimed ones later as well in the UK,
but it was kind of opposite to the US tv conventions, for a while there

thanks for the correction... any theories as to the reversing fortunes of live performance in the US and UK? I'd say increasing standardization & corporatization in the US, which in turn made the UK attempt to market its now-quaint friendliness to the arts as a form of cultural tourism.

Are there any photos kicking about from the Forest Hills gig?

>> any theories as to the reversing fortunes of live performance in the US and UK? <<

i know the UK musicians' unions required equal time for live performances on the radio -
that's why there were all those "live in the studio" shows in the early 60s. not sure about tv though.
maybe the UK tv studios just weren't equipped soundwise for live r&b until a bit later?

and in terms of "friendliness to the arts" ... i know there were times when the band insisted on playback
because they knew the tv sound guys would just screw it all up if they played for real.
the february 66 Sullivan Satisfaction might even be a big reason that was the last non-playback one they did.

I saw the Stones for the first time on that tour also. I was in Detroit at the time. I sure don't remember the set list ... it was a long time ago ...but that looks about right.

I was very excited about seeing them live, I'd been into them for a couple of years by then. It was sheer magic when they walked out !!

It was Cobo Hall, an indoor areana, set up like a horse shoe basically. I was one level up, not on the floor, which put us just above stage level. I sat facing the stage on the left, which meant I was on Brian's side. Mostly I remember watching Brian since he was so close, and Charlie since I'm a drummer.

The screaming was loud but no so loud that you couldn't hear the music. The lights went dark just before they came out but from where we were sitting we could see them run out to the side of the stage, run up the steps, pause, and then run to their places in the dark and wait for the announcer to say....
"The Rolling Stones!"

The lights came up, the music started and it was like they had just walked out of those magazines and off my record player, and holy cow, here they were!

The screaming all around me sort of added to the intensity ... even though I laughed a bit. I remember the set seemed awfully short, wham, bang thank you m'am....and they were gone. But I just sat there afterward feeling sort of drained from the intesity of the experience.

I remember readin in the paper about their first visit to Detroit in about '64 I think. The main drag in Detroit is Woodward Ave and apparently before their show they walked down Woodward shopping and no one knew who they were.
