Never knew this about Ron
Posted by: Edith Grove ()

"According To The Rolling Stones" page 345:

1990
12 November - Ron Wood breaks both legs after being hit by traffic on the M4; his car had crashed en route from his father in law's funeral.

Anyone know more about the extent of his injuries?
Last November, a few posters here were talking about Ron's lack of movement onstage. I think someone claimed he used a stool for most of a show. I was at the Boise show in November, and I noticed he wasn't very mobile there. I was FOS Keith's side and I don't recall Ron ever making it over to that side. Just has me wondering if an old injury might be giving him some problems.

I read somewhere, the first thing he asked about was.....(drumroll)...a cigarette

Yes, that happened, ron came to record highwire in a wheelchair, he was drunken at this occasion (the accident). But this happened in 1990, there are many many shows over the years where he´s moving, and he´s still moving like he was always moving, so don´t think about the accident if he dosn´t move a lot at a concert.

I heard that he is a gypsy....Roman..is that true?

I think you have to be a gypsy to lead the nomadic lifestyle of a Rolling Stone!

yeah, the barge-gypsy heritage is for real.

i read that in that accident, Ronnie's leg was broken in the crash, and when he got out of the car
to flag down help, another car hit him and broke the other leg. poor Ronnie!

the 2006 show where he had the stool was a result of an accident at the previous show:
Keith kicked without anticipating Ronnie backing right into it, and it caused a contusion.

Thanks for clearing that one up!

I was somewhat reluctant for even starting this thread for fear of creating a new "what's wrong with..." controversy. Old injuries do have a way of coming back on us. I have one myself. This old car crash is news to me and what better place to find out more about it than here?

Laten we die ballenbek van een Bjornulf niet te boos maken en netjes engels praten.

Yes I have been to Nijmegen!! And, not only did I see the @#$%&` great show, I also did what I`ve been wanting to do for quite some time: buy a pair of Stones-boxers. My girlfriend thinks their hiddeous. I should dump her right now, I know.

Seriously though, great show. I was in the front-area, Ronnie\'s side.

I stood next to an IORR member by the way. French guy smoking grass. Left of the catwalk, Ronnie`s side. WHO WAS IT?

i remember hearing this reported when it happened........but it didn't
get much press....and i always wondered about the severity of the collision...
afterall, ron is a scrawny dude...if a car hit him once (or twice) you'd
think it would've been more serious...head hitting pavement etc....

(didn't know the bit about Highwire in a wheelchair...anymore info?)

and as long as we're on the subject of Stones accidents....didn't
charlie tumble down the stairs and fracture some ribs? i think
it was around the same time as ron's mishap.

I remember Keith fracturing some ribs in a fall from his library ladder.

Found this...

"Rolling Stones star Charlie Watts has escaped death in a near-fatal car crash, it has been revealed.
The legendary drummer was travelling in a limousine in Nice on the French Riviera when his driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing a head-on smash.
Charlie was rushed to hospital where he was treated for cracked ribs and a broken sternum and has spent six weeks recovering.
He confessed: “But for the seat belt I’d be dead no question. I’m fine, thank God.”
After six weeks recuperation Charlie rejoined his Rolling Stones bandmates for the last month of recording their album before kicking off their world tour last week."

Was this after recovering from throat cancer?

Wow! Never heard that about Charlie, either.

Have I been living under a rock, or was his accident just not reported as widely as his cancer?

i first heard about the accident after the tour was well underway.
(we didn't hear about his cancer treatment either, until it was almost completed.)

Ronnie said somewhere that when he got out of the car, seeing another one heading straight for him, he dived over the bonnet of his own car, but his ankles just got clipped and were badly broken.

If he makes eighty it won't be his fault...

You might have to scrape me off the floor at the end of the tour, but it'll be really good scrapings. - Mick Jagger

I remember the incident very well. Then,as now, I work in Swindon & heard all about it when I got home that night. The headline in one of the UK gutter papers (The Sun I think) the next day was Jumpin' Jack Crash. I recall that Jo was driving & remember seeing a photo of the car on its side next to the central barrier of the motorway. He ended up in the main Swindon Hospital (Princess Margaret), which must have been an unexpected treat for Stones fans amongst those fellow patients in his ward !

It sticks in my mind because I saw the Stones for the 1st of my 15 gigs at Wembley just 10 or 11 weeks prior to the incident. If there was any long term damage I'm sure we would have seen it a long time before now.

Keep on rockin' Ronnie - stay off that booze. At 60 years old you're playing the best guitar of your life.

i read that too recently somewhere - that isn't Roman though, i think the proper term for the gypsies is Rom or Roma people, who are mostly from Romania - which was somehow all connected to the Romans, except don't know much about history...

How do they keep this stuff out of the news!? I read everything about our Boys and these accidents sure got by me; I think I heard about Ronnie but Charlie's rather recent accident was obviously covered up. I thought the same thing, Edith, wondering how LARGE is my ROCK that I apparently live under?

That was all over the news here when it happened in 1990. I remember it even being the main news item on MTV News as well.

yeah, I remember reading about it in Rolling Stone. He said something like, no worries, the doctor prescribed bed rest and plenty of Guinness.

as i noted earlier, they also did a very good job of keeping Charlie's cancer treatment quiet
until it was almost over. i'm glad they can do that at least sometimes.
there *should* be miles of things that we don't know about their private lives.
